How I Memorize Everything I Learn: Use Anki Like a Pro

so you've got this friend who talks about how  many anky cards they study each day they stay  

up late to revise their ankey cards they get up  at 5:00 a.m. to revise their flashcards again  

it becomes a real competition and you think  oh wow they're so productive I need to try  

it as well fast forward 2 months and you start  thinking it's not helping me become fluent at  

all what am I doing wrong or maybe the app is  ineffective which one is it my name is veronic  

and today we're going to figure it out together  I personally love using space repetition to learn  

vocabulary in foreign languages I'm a huge  fan of ani but I've recently noticed a lot  

of opposition coming its way pretty much every  argument against Ani isn't an argument against  

its use it's an argument for how it should not  be used remember Anki is a tool and you have to  

make it work for you understanding this tool can  help prevent Miss mishaps or mistakes mouthoy eat

slugs problem one it gets messy and overwhelming  quickly the time it takes to put together a good  

deck of cards using anky is no joke the size  of your ankey decks can quickly spiral out of  

control it becomes a cycle of adding new words  learning them and reviewing them you repeat it  

until you get overwhelmed and it seems easier to  just give up and try something else so here's the  

solution instead of reviewing your cards the  next day use this time to filter your decks  

create folders for words that relate to each  other making it easier to manage if you see  

there are too many words with no connection  to each other remember what was the context  

you picked that word from is it still relevant to  you you might not even remember it how many times  

have you heard or seen the word beside anky none  see you need to filter a lot guys you probably  

know it yourself quality over quantity create a  folder exclusively for conversations with your  

language buddy a folder for your meetings at work  especially the ones that you attend a lot you're  

going to end up with more folders but fewer words  it's great because then you won't spend 2 hours a  

day reviewing all of your cards you'll just do one  folder depending on what you're preparing for that  

day or week another idea you might consider doing  especially if you're just starring out with ankey  

you're just starting to create your own flashcards  is using programs like Subs to SRS or vocars which  

can turn an entire movie or a television show into  an ankey Deck with just a few clicks you can also  

use someone else's flash cards initially to test  the app without investing too much of your time

and how long to review and learn an's job is to  show you a flash card and its algorithm determines  

when the next edal review should be however as  the number of cards increases reviews can pile up  

before you know it you can spend half of your day  day going through anky reviews let alone learning  

new words so how to fix that solution go into the  ankey settings actually learn all the settings and  

change how many words you want to see each day or  use the approach James Clear proposed in his book  

Atomic Habits by making it obvious easy attractive  and satisfying most of us can control the start of  

our day so doing anky cards first thing in the  morning is a good thing to do start your with  

a sense of accomplishment instead of having this  nagging feeling in the back of your mind that you  

still have some cards to do if you avoid looking  at your phone first thing in the morning which  

is an amazing thing to do by the way I'm really  trying to do that too incorporate an into your day  

by habit stacking when I have a very busy day I  usually revise my ankey cards while at the gym or  

maybe when I'm cooking something when I'm eating  or when I'm brushing my teeth in the evening you  

can also try switching things up and do an while  listening to your favorite playlist or watching a  

TV show but obviously make sure that that playlist  or that show is not taking your full attention  

because of course you should be giving an your  full undivided attention it works especially well  

for somebody who doesn't like studying in silence  and needs something to listen to in the background  

the biggest reason why people quit Anki is that  they feel obligated to finish all of the reviews  

every single time this will cause spending more  time than necessary on the app set yourself a time  

limit how about 5 minutes but twice a day does it  sound more manageable to you Anki has a built-in  

feature for this called time boxing or try other  habit trackers to gamify your study routine like  

this heat map add-on that shows tricks and reminds  you to keep up with your practice it's Visual and  

motivating for someone who always lacks motivation  and needs that push to do things give yourself a  

every reward like a tiny snack you can only get  the reward when you do your daily ankey reviews  

problem three flashcards take language out of  context tell me if you feel the same there's a  

flash card with a word you know the meaning of but  you're not sure how to actually use this word and  

if you start thinking how you can use this word  in context and conversations you realize that  

you actually can't you have no idea how to use  this word maybe the context was so nuanced that  

you cannot see how you can use it otherwise like  recently I learned a word ulo in Spanish which  

means bony or too skinny I learned this word by  reading a book and to be honest I could not really  

see myself using this word ever there are a few  things to help you fix that according to the book  

learned like a pro by ol of sheave I really hope  I'm pronouncing his name correctly if I'm not I'm  

really sorry simple information like phone numbers  create short Pathways but when you're learning  

something complex the pathways grow longer and  form webs and connections and these connections  

cement what you learned into your long-term memory  the more neural Pathways you create the stronger  

the bonds between the neurons become similar  to your brain building neural networks to store  

memories the learning process requires forming  strong neural Pathways to store knowledge so yeah  

guys if you create flash cards by doing this word  translation word translation word translation you  

won't memorize much because there are no Concepts  behind them Solution One make your flash cards  

engaging imagine being in your first geometry  class drawing a square it's flat on paper Four  

Corners that's it when you're in high school you  learn to draw it as a 3D object it becomes a cube  

that can store something inside same thing with  flash cards you have to make them a 3D concept for  

each of your cards spend a little bit more time  to go deep deeper and connect that concept to  

your prior existing knowledge or other things that  you already know add a picture that represents a  

scenario of using that word in context think of  intonations and emotions that you feel when you  

say this word it doesn't take a lot of time to set  up but it pays off in efficiency your flesh cards  

become more engaging and enjoyable and that's  why so many people say that if you can don't  

use other people's flash cards create your own  it's going to be a lot more effective let's go  

back to the word UDA in Spanish that I'm trying  to memorize first I pronounce this word multiple  

times to make sure I know how to say correctly ulo  then I look at a structure I know that I already  

know the word bone in Spanish which is wesso so  this makes it easier for me to memorize the word  

ulo then I try to remember the context where  I first saw that word I was reading the book  

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and there was a  nice phrase there the Charli and anos esos then I  

create my own personal connection I think how can  I use this word and real life and conversations  

to be honest I would probably use this word while  talking about stray dogs who live outside because  

they don't have much to eat so they're very  bony extremely thin so my sentence would be

solution two separate your active and passive  vocabulary folders guys tell me please how you  

come up with the words to use for flashcards  there are probably two ways you're doing that  

and now tell me which one you believe is more  effective one you see a rare word in a book or  

a news article you look it up and you learn the  meaning right away you decide whether or not to  

save it as a flesh card two knowing you will read  specific literature you add a deck of cards with  

unfamiliar words in advance your reviewing your  cards with a hopes that one day when you actually  

need this word you'll be able to recall it all  right so which one is it which one do you do  

more often which approach do you think will help  you become fluent in my opinion you'd rather give  

yourself the opportunity to talk to someone for 30  minutes and then from this conversation take away  

three or five phrases to learn versus doing flesh  GS for 30 minutes a week or even a day to prepare  

yourself for a conversation unless of course you  know what you're preparing for you're preparing  

for an exam or a test and you know they will be  testing you on all of these words Ani helps a lot  

in terms of active recall especially recalling  information that you have already seen or maybe  

your mistakes you made a mistake you corrected  yourself you put this sentence into ankey and  

now every time you see it maybe you feel tempted  to make this mistake again but you see the right  

answer on your screen an is a valid resource  for keeping your passive vocabulary relevant  

until you can immerse more this is what an is  perfect for it makes it easy to acquire those  

words to build your passive vocabulary in a  shorter time frame but you would not want to  

learn the entire language with it an is not  supposed to be the only source of your you're
