Basic English Grammar - How to show possession in English - MY / MINE, HER / SHE / HERS, and more!

Hey guys, this is Alex. Thanks for clicking and welcome to this lesson on possessive adjectives

and pronouns. Now, some of you might confuse when to use a possessive adjective and a possessive

pronoun. Some of you might not know what these are yet. If you don't, this is the perfect

lesson for you. Now, here we have the subjects in English, which you have seen in every grammar

book ever. I, you, he, she, it, we, they. Now, for example, I have a watch, okay? And

I would ask you, "Who is the owner of this watch?" You'd say, "Well, that is..." Watch.

I would say, "This is my watch." Okay? "This is my watch." My. "This watch is mine." Okay?

So here we have the adjectives and the pronouns. Well, we're going to put them in. So for I,

the adjective is, "This is my." Okay? For you, that is your watch, your book, your pencil.

He, his. Okay? That's his brother, his mother, his father. She, her. Okay? That is her car.

It, its. Now, its is a little strange because it is usually, well, not usually, always used

for objects. Now, it's difficult for an object to own something. Like, I can't say that a

table is the owner of something. But if I'm talking about a dog, for example, and a dog

has a tail, like, what is that? That's its tail, I guess. Okay? Now, we, our. This is

our class, our English class. Okay? Let's get that a little more defined there. It's

very strong O. Okay? They, their. For example, that is their house. Okay? Now, what you notice

about the examples I gave with my, your, his, her, its, our, their, and just for consistency,

I will make this a small I. Okay? What you notice is I always follow them with something.

Now again, these are actually adjectives because they describe a noun. They describe a noun

you own. Right? So, you always follow it with, are always followed by something. Okay? So,

you need an object to possess. So, my mother, your book, his table, his/her chair, its something,

its tail, we're talking about the dog, our class, their house. Okay? You always follow

it with something. Now, the pronouns always come at the end of a sentence, and you do

not follow them with anything. So, I is mine. So, earlier I said, "I have a watch. This

is my watch. This watch is mine." Okay? You, your, yours. Okay? This English class is yours.

We, his, his is the same. His, her, hers, its. This one we don't really use very frequently

or often at all, so I'm just going to leave it blank because we don't really use this.

Okay? We, our, ours, and their is theirs. Okay. So, guys, these ones, again, an adjective

followed by something. The pronoun will always come at the end. It comes at the end. The

end of the sentence. Okay? And it is not followed by a noun, not something to possess. Okay?

So, if you know this information, you follow an adjective with something. You don't follow

the possessive pronoun with anything. How do you fill in the blanks here? This is pen.

This pen is. So, do I say, "This is mine pen," or, "This is my pen?" This is my pen, right?

Because pen is something. It's a noun, and you have to precede it with the possessive

adjective. This is my pen. So, naturally, this pen is mine. Now, this is a basic part
