Advanced English Words. Improve Your Vocabulary + Practice Test (Verbs C1-C2)

Hello, everyone Today we gonna  

learn new advanced vocabulary that  can make you sound more native. 

5 verbs, you can encounter them in academic papers, you can use them in your essays, 

And if you’re preparing for IELTS, TOEFL or CAE, you will benefit from watching this video.

We gonna discuss language that  is used by native speakers  

not very often, but if you use these words in your conversation, you can make people think  

you’re a well-read , a very intelligent person

At first let’s have a look at the example and then I will explain the meaning in detail. 

Number 1. equivocate I asked her straight questions,  

but she was equivocating most of the  time and didn’t give me straight answers. 

If you equivocate, you try to hide your  opinion and don’t say everything you think. 

1. Equivocate means to use  

not clearly understandable language when you want to conceal the truth or avoid committing yourself.

Now let’s move on to Number 2. disabuse. I was trying to disabuse my boss about  

his decision to fire my co-worker, but he was persistent and didn’t want to listen to me. 

If somebody disabuses you,  he tries to persuade you  

that an idea or belief is mistaken, he  tries to prove that something is wrong. 

Disabuse means to free from  a misconception, to rid of false ideas

Number 3. abscond The thief had tried to abscond,  

but the police caught him in hot pursuit. 

If you run away from the crime scene,  that means you abscond the responsibility. 

Abscond means to secretly avoid  some responsibility, arrest, or punishment

Now let’s move on to Number 4. Placate. The hotel manager was trying to placate us by  

offering some extra nights for a stolen wallet. So someone has stolen my wallet and I was  

angry and I came to the hotel manager, and he was trying to settle me down and offered some  

extra nights to stay. When you placate a person,  

you try your best to make everything to  please them and become calmer and less angry. 

Placate means make someone  less angry or hostile.

Number 5. proliferate Despite all the efforts  

of the world’s healthcare organizations,  COVID-19 continues to proliferate. 

When something proliferates, it is growing, spreading or multiplying really quickly. 

Proliferate means to increase in  number or spread rapidly and often excessively.

Now let’s have a little test so that  you not only learn new vocabulary  

but also practice these words  and put them into your memory.

Equivocate to listen carefully 

to speak with the intention to hide the truth to please someone 

Disabuse to persuade that something is false 

to make something less harmful to keep away from something 

Abscond 

to make someone feel happy to avoid some responsibility 

to run away from making decisions 

Placate to manage to do something 

to make someone less angry to avoid doing something 

Proliferate to work hard on the problem 

to reduce spending money to increase in number or spread rapidly
