the sounds of the little baby chicks flying around and being fed I hope you

on my holidays so mr. Steve and myself we are going away courtesy of mr.

Steve's company so the company that mr. Steve works for has actually given him a

prize because he's been working very hard and the good news is I can go along

with him as well so we are about to go on holiday that is the theme of today's

lesson and I will be disappearing soon to a

certain place but I'm not going to tell you where it is at the moment I want to

keep it a secret for a little while longer

holiday mood because June is here traditionally here in the UK we often

think of June and July as being the months when we all go away on our

holidays so I will be talking about holidays today and also some of the

things that you might have to do before you go away some of the preparation that

you have to carry out before you go away so it's nice to see you all here again

locked on a ship with lots of people together I don't think I would like that

very much and nowadays some of these ships are huge they are gigantic they

can hold maybe two thousand people so no I don't like the idea of being on a

cruise stuck on a ship with lots and lots of other people getting drunk every

night so let's have a look at some words and some useful phrases and maybe even

some useful advice relating to going holiday because I am going away soon I

have my towel ready so here we go what do you need to do when you go on holiday

look yes follow the words on the screen if you want to you are more than welcome

to do so because that's why we are here to learn the English language so we have

some lovely words here and we are talking about going on holiday you can

see here I have my lovely suitcase my suitcase there are many words you can

use to describe this particular item so before you go on holiday you normally

pack your suitcase so before you go away you pack you put things into your

suitcase suitcase can also be described as luggage also we can call it baggage

so the general term for this is luggage baggage we can also say suitcase so the

item itself is the thing you are taking a suitcase and the big question is

before you go away what should you pack what do I pack what

do I put in my suitcase well of course you must pack things that are useful

you must pack things that you will need whilst you are away and we often use

this word the essentials essentials this particular word means the important

things that you will need whilst you are away the essential things that you need

whilst you are away on holiday so this phrase is important if you are planning

to do something especially if you are going away you need to make sure that

you have the essential things the things that

need to take with you so if something is essential it means it is really needed

it is something that you will need the essentials and what about the things you

need well we are going to take a look at some of the things you might pack in

your suitcase but remember remember don't put too much in your suitcase

don't pack too much into the suitcase try not to overfill the suitcase if you

put too much in the suitcase you know what will happen well you won't be able

to get the lid closed you won't be able to close the lid so don't forget don't

overpack don't put too many things in the

suitcase because you won't be able to close the lid there will be too many

things in the suitcase you will not be able to close it so what types of things

might you take on holiday with you well there are many different things that you

can take with you on holiday I suppose the first thing that you will think

about of course clothes clothes you will need to wear some clothes unless of

course you are in Saudi Arabia because one of my viewers said that apparently

it's so hot in Saudi Arabia people are walking around naked I can't believe

that for a second so you might need some clothing clothes the things you want to

take with you in your suitcase you need some clothing now we often pack things

that are very lightweight we don't want too many heavy things in our suitcase

and the reason for that is because you have to carry it you have to carry the

suitcase you have to push the suitcase or pull the

case also when you get to the airport if you are traveling abroad you might find

that if your bag is too heavy you will have to pay an extra charge can you

believe it so don't pack too many things don't put

too many things in the suitcase nothing too heavy also remember when you are

there on your holiday you will be wearing things during the day and during

the night so make sure you have lots of things prepared lightweight clothes

something to walk around in during the day

remember also where you will be where will you be going to where are you going

somewhere cold or somewhere hot so when you choose your clothes always remember

you might need some warm clothing in your suitcase as well so the things to

remember comfort yes don't take things that are uncomfortable because you need

to relax so make sure you take plenty of

comfortable clothing so comfort is very important I think so also here's another

good word convenience convenience you need something that is easy to put on

and take off so something that's lightweight something that you can carry

around with you convenience is also important when you are packing your

suitcase especially when it comes to clothes and you can take things that are

casual casual something that is relaxing to wear and maybe you are going

somewhere nice or somewhere very posh and exclusive in which case you will

need to take something that is very formal very smart so you need to dress

very partly so formal and casual casual is

relaxed formal is if you are going somewhere important or maybe you are

going to a special party where you have to wear very nice clothing so we call

that formal casual relaxed formal not relaxed so today we are talking about

going on holiday the things you will need to pack in your suitcase because I

am going away on my holiday very soon but where are you going are you going

anywhere exciting for your holiday are you going

anywhere nice for your vacation there are many ways of describing your holiday

you can say holiday vacation trip I am going on a vacation I am taking a

holiday I am going on a trip and maybe the trip is is just somewhere local or

maybe you are going to another country perhaps you are going abroad

have heard the news yes mr. Duncan has very big feet and I find sometimes if I

walk for a very long time my feet begin to ache they really start to hurt a lot

so don't forget to take some very nice comfortable Footwear and that includes

the ladies as well not just the men I know that you ladies you like to wear

your very fashionable shoes with the high heels but the problem is if you

walk in them for too long your feet will hurt and then your holiday will be

ruined oh now here's something you will

definitely need if you go away some nice shorts if you are going to a hot country

then you will need some lightweight shorts some lightweight clothing such as

these shorts they look very comfortable very lightweight I imagine if you are

walking around on a hot day these will keep you very cool so clothing such as

shorts shorts don't forget the pockets don't forget to

make sure that your shorts have some pockets because pockets we know what

pockets are they are very useful things you can put lots of useful things in

your pockets so if you do have a pair of shorts try

to get a pair of shorts that have some nice pockets so you can put your things

in them if you are planning to go walking at night if you want to take a

walk in the evening or at night then you might need one of these you can pack a

nice lightweight coat just in case it gets cold there so it might get cold and

chilly at night so you can take a light weight coat so that word we are using a

lot today lightweight something that isn't too

heavy something that isn't too bulky it is light weight and of course if you are

packing your suitcase you will need to make sure that you don't put too many

heavy things inside you will need a coat especially at night yes at night when

you are walking around after the Sun has gone down it might become very breezy it

might become a little chilly so you will definitely need

a lightweight coat to wear at night something that is also waterproof in

case it rains so you might go to a country that has lots of sunshine but

now and again it might also rain so perhaps you are coming to the UK people

say that it always rains in the UK it's not true trust me it isn't true but a

lot of people believe that it always rains in the UK but it isn't here in

England we do have rain sometimes but during the summer yes we do get some

sunshine now and again so don't forget to take your coat a nice lightweight

is out so if it's too sunny you might want to put your umbrella up there is a

word for a type of umbrella that protects you from the Sun we call it a

parasail parasail a parasail is an umbrella that

you put up to protect you from the Sun parasail it is a French word what's the

difference between waterproof and water repellent well to be honest with you

they are very similar so waterproof means that the water will not soak in

the water will not go through water repellent means the same thing the water

doesn't matter so yeah there you go if you are going to a beach resort then you

will need a pair of shorts these are called the muta shorts these are

the beach and these particular types of footwear these are called flip-flops

that word so much ah now here is something that I have on my body right

now can you see my lovely towel here it is so I'm wearing my towel at the moment

and yes if you are planning to go to the beach you will definitely need one of

these beach towel a beach towel a beach towel is something that is very useful a

beach towel is normally oversized so normally a beach towel is large it is

very big so it is designed for for you to sit on or lie on so a beach towel is

oversized so it can be laid out on the sand some beach towels are very large in

fact some beach towels are so large you can actually put a whole family on them

so sometimes a beach towel is very large very big you can sunbathe on a beach

towel you can lie down and you can enjoy the lovely sunshine as it shines down

and you can get a lovely tan so when you go home all your friends will say oh wow

have you been on holiday you have a gorgeous tan so beach towel it is the

thing I have at the moment around my neck my lovely beach towel and yes this

is the actual beach towel that I will be taking with me when I go

very convenient if you are sitting on an aeroplane that's a very good point

because if you are sitting on an aeroplane for a very long time it can be

a very unpleasant thing now I'm going to be honest with you many years ago I used

to go to Malaysia quite often and if you have been to Malaysia you may have

noticed that sometimes the flight is very long so if you are flying from the

UK to Malaysia it will take 13 hours 13 hours yeah

even the Blackbird doesn't like it did you hear that even the Blackbird doesn't

like 13 hours flying his wings will get very tired so if you are on a plane for

a very long time you might find that your your joints your arms and your back

and your legs will start to ache so yes I think that's a very good idea if you

as long as it covers your head so as long as your head is protected from the

you go on holiday so yes you might need sunglasses in fact to be honest with you

talking about medicines you will need to contact some medical assistants as well
