Are we on? Are you ready? Am I ready? Is the world ready? Here we go again yes it is sunday,

it's a fun day, it's time to improve your english listening and yes we are outside i'm

still not sure if this is a good idea or not but we are outside and yes this is english

addict live from the birthplace of english which just happens to be oh england!

are we on definitely are you sure hi everybody this is mr duncan in england how are you today

are you okay i hope so are you happy well aren't you happy i hope you are happy for

two reasons one well we've made it through another week that's a pretty good reason to

be happy i think the other reason to be happy is i'm outside of course that is good news

because i can take in this lovely english fresh air all around me everything is lovely

today it feels very autumnal autumnal i love that word by the way autumnal before anyone

asks there are no live captions i don't know what is going on with the live captions but

it would appear that youtube has chopped the live captions away there are no live captions

i'm ever so sorry about that i did find out last week that there are ways of getting live

captions onto your youtube streams the only problem is you have to pay for it so they

are going to ask me to pay to have live captions so there are companies working with youtube

and if you want to have live captions you have to pay hundreds of pounds to do it for

the pleasure for for the privilege of having live captions so i'm going to be honest with

you i'm not exactly pleased by that news i will be honest with you talking of technology

i'm just setting up my equipment here just to make sure that we are now going out la

are we going out are we actually definitely live yes oh isn't that nice i always feel

slightly relieved when i discover that we are actually going out live by the way what

do you think of the weather at the moment look at look at the day we're having here

oh it is misty it is very humid very damp it really does feel as if well i suppose you

could say that it feels as if

i don't know why it looks as if i have no colour in my face can i just assure you now

i'm feeling great even though on friday i went to the doctors on friday to have a little

checkup because i've been having pains in my ear and i think maybe i have a slight ear

infection because of all the cold weather and all of the damp i think some of it has

actually gone into my brain i think so so i went to the doctors fortunately he did not

feel the need thankfully because of social distancing he did not ask to put his finger

up my bum so i'm very pleased about that for for a long time i've been dreading going to

the doctors because i'm at that age you see i i have reached that delicate age so thanks

to social distancing the doctor was was in another room shouting very loudly it is very

hard having your ear examined when the doctor is about 25 feet away from you it's very hard

i'm in the garden i decided to take a risk today whether that risk will pay off if something

pays off it means it is successful you try something you try to do something you you

think um i will try to do it maybe i will be successful or maybe i won't be successful

but you try it anyway so i thought i would give it a try i'm outside for those who think

that this is the green screen behind me it is not a green screen this is actually the

real view at the back of me i can prove it as well would you like me to prove that this

is real okay then i will go into my background

it's all real i'm in the garden mr steve will be with us of course as it is sunday i couldn't

resist bringing mr steve along for the ride

so how has your week been has it been a good one any news anything interesting happening

in your life please let me know because i'm ever so nosy i'm a little bit nosy like that

you see we have some sad news as well coming a little bit later on a little bit of sad

news something concerning the area in which i live something a little bit sad i don't

want to make you feel too miserable today but yes a little sad news coming by the way

yesterday morning oh i couldn't resist filming the view from my window yesterday morning

take a look at this wow so there it is that is the view or it was the view from my window

yesterday morning and as you can see because of the strange temperatures that we are experiencing

at the moment there is a lot of humidity and in the morning you can see that because of

the temperature being low and then suddenly warm you can see that there is a lot of mist

rolling across the landscape just across from where i live and i couldn't resist taking

some shots of that very event look at that isn't that lovely so what a lovely autumnal

way to start your day and i thought i would share it with you as well for those who are

interested in that sort of thing we will have a look at another view now come on move the

camera mr duncan we want to see something else now oh yes that looks like one of my

neighbours yes it is that time of year again as the temperature begins to drop people are

now lighting their fires their log burners so what people tend to do at this time of

year they have some logs some pieces of firewood in their house and they will light their fire

to keep them warm including us so we have a little log burner and yes during the past

couple of nights we have lit the fire just to show that autumn has arrived and of course

winter winter is on the way in fact last week we had some logs delivered we we were running

very short of logs so we actually have some now and there you can see in the distance

some some sheep in the field one of the many fields near to where i live and yes it was

a very misty morning yesterday very misty the mist was rolling by across the hills and

it was a lovely morning very atmospheric atmospheric i think that's that's a good word to use there

to describe that situation oh and there's another view looking into the distance and

you might be able to see a little robin sitting on the tree

hello mr robin what are you doing go on mr robin i think the robin is going to go off

and look for a nice juicy worm i think so in a moment maybe perhaps there it was the

view yesterday and there is another view oh look at that now i think this shot this particular

shot is quite quite a good one because you can see everything you can see all of the

the back of the house something very dramatic has happened with the cows so you might hear

yesterday doing something very interesting but what was it find out later on we are going

to take a look at a very interesting action as well as we live through these very odd

times very strange times a lot of people are becoming sensitive to certain issues or certain

actions that have been carried out by other people maybe organizations maybe a shop or

a person maybe a certain company and sometimes people will react quite badly to these events

so much they will actually boycott that particular thing if you boycott something what does it

mean we will be looking at that a little bit later on as well oh we also have the sentence

game yes i couldn't resist we have the sentence game today as well we are looking at random

letters so random letters we have the sentence game i promise this week i won't talk to steve

for too long because last week we got very excited did you see the live stream last week

that sort of thing that's what we were discussing last week in fact we got so excited we almost

forgot to have the sentence game so i promise today i promise there will be no dilly-dallying

now preparing to go to sleep they're preparing to take a rest during the winter months so

still and stable there isn't much happening so there aren't any new flowers growing nothing

yes can you see just behind me there are some autumn colours as well so the autumn colours

streams in the garden however the weather at the moment is changing as we approach winter

live stream out in the garden for this year we will have to wait and see what happens

it is cold and damp my hands already are starting to get cold to be honest

much wenlock is a tiny town and it's situated in the midlands the middle of england very

close to wales have you heard the news wales have now decided to keep everyone from outside

wales out they don't want anyone from outside wales visiting because of

you know what you know what i'm talking about so i'm very close to wales unfortunately at

the moment i can't go there because they don't want anyone to spread the lurgy the disease

look at something that i think will make us feel warm and cozy and happy who remembers

the lesson that i made all about going on holiday do you know where i made it can you

remember well the answer is coming up right now and then after this it's mr steve

i hope so here i am on my summer holiday taking in the sights and sounds of turkey in today's

lesson we will take a look at words and sentences connected with and relating to going on holiday

welcome to turkey

so

turkey is a country that covers a large area of land known as the anatolian peninsula it

sits precariously on the europe-asia border and not too far away from the middle east

which frequently causes confusion over where the country actually is

the place i'm staying at is on a small island off the south west coast called chevalier

ancient history records Constantinople as the centre of the roman empire and of course

turkey is the birthplace of the ottoman empire whose formation occurred towards the end of

the 13th century and continued to be there right up until the early 1900s the recent

history of turkey has been a traumatic one with a military coup the division of land

between greece and civil war creating many problems especially during the 1970s and early

1980s tragedy hit this nation in 1999 when a tremendous earthquake struck with devastating

consequences

for most people summer is the time for taking a holiday some will stay in their own country

and take a domestic holiday while others will take a long trip to another country they will

go abroad they will travel overseas a person may travel just a few miles to a nearby country

or they might decide to travel to a completely different part of the world thousands of miles

there are many different types of holiday which can be taken the choice is yours from

relaxing get away from it all beach holidays where you simply spend the time doing as little

as possible right up to the wild adventure holidays where you spend most of the time

exploring the sights and taking in the sounds the adventures can be on land or water high

up in the air or even deep down at the bottom of the sea after spending so much time on

the small island i have decided to take a boat trip across the bay to the nearest port

on the turkish mainland called fettier

there is nothing like the feeling of being on a boat one so small you certainly feel

the force of each wave as one by one they lash up against the

whole

i'm not a big fan of being on water however for some reason today i do not seem too worried

huh

oh wow who remembers my turkey lesson some lovely sights there and some nice memories

as well i will be honest with you that really did warm my heart let's face it today i'm

outside it's not very warm it's a little damp so i needed those beautiful sights to to warm

my cockles here he comes then are you ready mr steve is about to appear

know uh zuzika wants to go on holiday of course this is the problem at the moment we can't

go on holiday because of you know what corona virus i didn't think he was saying that mr

duncan i thought you were restricting yourself we can say it now you see i think youtube

has decided that you can say it so we can now say it it is no longer censored well it

would be lovely to go back there in fact some friends of ours who live in birmingham they

went to uh the same place we went to uh i think it was last year okay uh and they had

a wonderful time we've never been we've never been to istanbul we didn't go there because

in istanbul they have i think it's the largest marketplace in the world it is huge it's famous

i think for its uh for its markets i think so so that's one of the things i remember

when we went we went to turkey and i remember we went around some of the bazaars

talking talking of bazaars here is something now that's very bizarre huh you see did you

see what i did there clever you managed to weave that word in to the lesson now i don't

want to start off on a sad note but we do have a little bit of sad news we've noticed

that some of our little guests in the field behind us some of them have have sadly gone

away so i thought before we talk about this i thought it would be nice just to have a

little look at some of the lovely cows some of which have have recently left unfortunately

let's have a look at this look at this steve oh i think it might bring a tear to our eyes

i have a feeling um

ah i don't i don't want to be depressing today but sadly the the cows some of the cows not

all of them some of them have sadly gone they've been taken away last week we were rather upset

slightly surprised as well to find that a lot of them have been taken away so there

is only three cows left in the field three black cows and how many were there before

seven there were eight eight so there were eight and now only three so five of them have

gone away we don't know what has happened to those cows don't like to think about it

so we're not thinking too much about it but yeah it's it's strange how you can become

attached to animals every year this happens with the cows they are my favorite animal

uh as i've probably mentioned before well i think some people have have commented that

they can hear the cows ah in the live stream today because there are only three left as

duncan said but they're a bit they're upset you can tell they're upset yeah i think the

cows there are only three left and i think they are actually upset they're missing their

friends because one of them keeps yes very loudly all the time and uh tomik hello thomas

tomic said you must have heard this over the live stream earlier because he said is that

a cow or is mr steve arriving oh i see obviously suggesting that i sound like a cow i think

so thanks for that it sounds like that you need it so so that that's a little bit of

sad news i don't want to be i don't want to be depressing today so so let's have a look

at the cows again when they were all together happy and jumping around.

oh my goodness so many happy memories absolutely lovely

we were just commenting what we mr duncan those shots were taken not long after they

arrived and how small they were compared to how how they've grown we've just realized

that they're much bigger now much bigger mind you i'm not surprised we've been feeding them

enough yes we have we have been feeding them apples they love apples they like they love

apples in fact they nearly crashed because it's very muddy now out there because it's

been raining and uh the cows ran down the other day and wanted to stop before reaching

the fence and in fact did a great big skid for about two years they did it was hilarious

but yes we love the cows hopefully we will see some more cows next year we may see sheep

in the spring and then we may see cows so let's hope these three but they are they're

quite upset they're quite upset they keep moving and everything but anyway so if you

see if you hear any strange sounds today like in the distance that's one of the cows feeling

very lonely well upset i would say upset because i think one of them i noticed today uh one

of the other cows was bullying this particular one and uh so i think you know i don't know

why but i think it's upset because it's missing its friends and it's being bullied by one

of the other cows i think you're saying so eve even in the animals duncan when he bullies

me even in the animal kingdom because people always say that animals are much nicer to

each other than human beings but even animals can be nasty and vicious towards each other

especially when they they are trying to survive you see it's the same thing so sometimes in

the animal kingdom amongst the animals well things can be unpleasant as well i think so

they're not our cows fedor says are they your cows no uh that field although it's at the

back of our house doesn't belong to us uh it belongs to a farmer maybe one day yes maybe

one day right mr duncan what are we talking about today well we're talking about something

that you were doing yesterday you were up to something in the garden i'm going to show

the video clip i'm always up to something i was up to something this morning mr dos

because i like to be busy i like to be doing something all the time so so steve at the

moment it has gone absolutely crazy crazy crazy for gardening so here's steve yesterday

in the garden and and i i suppose you can explain steve what were you doing here well

can you see that wall behind you how i've cleaned that off mr duncan i i sprayed it

down with a high pressure spray well what so what i'm doing there is the the flagstones

which a lot of you who have been watching over the summer will realize i've been uh

resetting all those um but as you can see they look a bit green and they get covered

in a in a layer of moss and slime yes and of course at this time of year they can become

a little dangerous a little slippery so yes it may you can see in the distance there they're

looking a bit green and slimy and they're actually quite dangerous to walk on so i'm

using uh a moss and lichen killer okay so it is it a type of i suppose you could describe

it as is weed killer but it's but it's for something different yes i would say you probably

class it as a herbicide but it specifically kills moss and lichen lichen on walls and

surfaces and it's very good because it lasts about six months it soaks into the into those

slabs and then whenever it rains it reactivates it and i bought this sprayer the other week

to make the job a bit easier but you have to pump it up to put some pressure in there

and uh you can carry it around it's quite a big job as you can see it took me about

two or three hours to go around everywhere yesterday uh killing off all the moss because

we don't want to slip over i don't want you mr duncan to slip over and injure yourself

i certainly don't so there it is there it's like a pressure hose so what mr steve has

to do he has to pump the the handle at the top and then that creates pressure inside

the container and then mr steve can spray he can spray his herbicide to my heart's content

that particular device uh is made in italy oh okay so if anybody from italy is watching

uh that is italian i'm just wondering why very high quality why do they call that machine

mary i wonder why i don't know why because that mary is obviously a lady's name a female

name but for some reason they give it a name that was the smallest one you could buy okay

there it is then that that's the that so that's what steve was doing yesterday you can see

it all on the concrete slabs mr steve keeping himself very busy indeed oh marietta says

that they can use oh marietta says that you can use bleach to get rid of weeds now that's

a good idea it's very cheap as well i might try that bleach because then as well it would

also make the slabs go a nice bright colour valentina says here i am here i am in italy

hello italy well with a name like valentina you've got to be in italy so yes that is an

italian product that i was using there and i was a short assured assured by the shopkeeper

okay where i bought it from that that was very high quality and many people purchased

that particular make here in the uk uh it wasn't particularly expensive no that's good

yeah but ashley had that for years do you remember last week we were talking about various

things including lockdown and the fact that you are now working from home in your job

tomek suggested last week that you might be able to claim some of your expenses guess

what tomek has just told us on the live chat good news everyone my company is going to

compensate the extra cost of working from home i will get an additional tax-free 30

euros from this month hell interesting yes i'm sure tomic mentioned this last week yes

um yeah because i am using more heating i mean i know you're at home all the time but

for a lot of people who go out to work if they are now working from home they are going

to be using more electricity more heating more internet and yes i'm going to suggest

that tomic thank you very much particularly during this winter period it'll be cold i'll

need the heating on higher yes uh yes yeah because i mean we used to be able to claim

yeah here isn't here's another thing steve cut me off something i've noticed now just

besides the heating in the house there is something else that we've noticed that we're

doing more and more

going to the toilet going to the toilet well maybe yes that might be connected eating eating

eating what i don't know if is it us is it just us or or are you having the same situation

are you finding that you are eating and i suppose i should say buying more food than

you normally would whilst you are at home so i've noticed every time we go out to the

shops we always seem to come back with something to eat now i'm not sure maybe i have a problem

maybe we both have a problem maybe we are becoming compulsive eaters gluttons well yeah

you might you might not be able to control the amount of food that you eat but i must

admit i think since this this strange situation has begun i think we we are definitely buying

food and eating more food i think so well definitely eating more junk food biscuits

yes chocolate crisps in fact we've got to do something about that we get into this habit

every night now because we always have our main meal in the evening around 7 30 and then

we stuff ourselves with crisps and chocolate and whatever afterwards and then you go to

bed and it's very uncomfortable um sergio says valentina is also a common name in russia

okay as well so uh of course there was the famous silent movie star who was also very

attractive uh apparently he a lot of the girls a lot of the women liked him rudolph valentino

wow and uh rudolph yeah yes yes he was russian but his name isn't valentina no uh yes yes

i see your point a valentina says what that product the product i was using was that spraying

device that was made in italy yes and i don't know the name the name of it i would have

to go and have a look if we have a break maybe i'll go and have a look later and it says

it's very cold and windy in moscow today uh well i think we could be getting some of your

weather because it's a bit uh it's a bit cold here yes yeah it's very damp it feels autumnal

so i suppose the weather today here in england isn't that unusual for the time of year because

it is autumn and quite often you will expect to have well i suppose you would have a lot

of dampness humidity and you can see behind also in the distance as well yesterday morning

oh wasn't the weather lovely yesterday morning steve well it i we opened the curtains and

we could see this lovely mist and there it is mr duncan in the distance not where we

were we could see it rolling through the valleys and it looked very attractive very nice uh

we could see birds flying in and out of the mist and it was all very attractive and beautiful

yes i suppose you would say that that type of weather is atmospheric it really feels

like autumn that's why i like autumn so not just because of the the sight of the leaves

changing color but also the the feeling as well there is a very special feeling that

comes during autumn time yes that could be mistaken for smog but it's just it's just

water vapor mist from low cloud andy doesn't eat junk food oh okay aren't you a good boy

you are very good we're very well behaved but my worry is that during this this lockdown

period and also the period where we are spending more time at home steve working at home i'm

working at home as usual so so for me nothing has really changed but we are definitely eating

i think we are eating more food it's it's just the feeling that i have somebody called

valentina was the first female astronaut oh okay uh presumably russian russian yes well

she wasn't she wasn't a hurry yes she was russian she was rushing rush into space tomic

mentioned it lewis seemed to think it's true so well popular name very popular i think

so today we're talking about something a situation that seems to be happening more and more as

people disagree with what companies or certain organizations or groups or maybe an individual

such as a favourite famous actor or actress we are seeing more people deciding to boycott

things boycott boycott now i believe you have an interesting story to tell about boycotting

coming up in a moment but let's have a look at the word shall we because maybe some people

are not familiar with the word boycott so the word boycott is now coming up on the screen

there it is boycott it's an interesting word isn't it there are many ways of describing

this word many ways of using this word besides boycott you can also say avoid so maybe if

a person upsets you or maybe if you have bad service somewhere or maybe if a company says

something or does something that you disagree with strongly you might decide to boycott

that company yes so that would mean that you would stop buying products from them as a

protest a boycott is is really a type of protest isn't it yes somebody does something you don't

like a company for example and you decide that you're not going to buy products from

that company anymore and the word you use is you boycott them so it's nothing to do

with uh somewhere to put a baby boy in not young it's not a it's not a boy cut we will

be looking at the the the reason why we use that word in a moment interesting boycott

yes well people might decide we might say something that will offend people on the live

stream yes and a number of you may say well i don't want to milk watch mr duncan and mr

steve anymore they've upset me i'm going to boycott their live streams and i'm going to

convince lots of other people to do it as well we hope you don't we do we hope you don't

we hope you don't but you could do that so you might boycott something you might avoid

going somewhere maybe a certain supermarket or maybe a certain actor you will refuse to

see their movies and watch their movies anymore you might blacklist someone as well there's

an interesting word blacklist so a list of things that you will ignore or avoid things

that you have decided to boycott or things that you will avoid going to you boycott them

for various reasons you stay away from somewhere steve is is there any story that you might

want to share with us steve i think you might have to remind me i'm just trying to think

what uh what your story is if i if i said the farmer's market in much wenlock oh yes

ah

steve for a very long time decided to stay away from the farmer's market i boycotted

them yes just myself uh yes they annoyed me it was a very simple saturday afternoon very

simple nothing nothing unusual was happening but we went to the local market in much wenlock

and we decided to buy something i can't remember what it was we were buying what was it i think

it was vegetables well it would have been vegetables or possibly i think it was carrots

and onions something like that so some vegetables as i said mr steve picked up his vegetables

the lady weighed the vegetables to see how much it would cost and then she said oh that's

how much it costs and then steve gave some money didn't you yes i gave some money to

her and she gave me some change yeah first of all she gave me the wrong change yes she

uh gave me the wrong change and i said to her oh you've given me the wrong change and

then i gave her back the change she'd given me and she said that i didn't give you that

there was a 50 p piece 50 pence small denomination coin yes that was a fake one yes uh it was

it was a fake coin it was a foreign one it was a foreign coin that looked very similar

to r50p and she wouldn't take it back and she'd just given it to me yes so it was it

was she'd done some kind of little trick yeah giving me the wrong change and then giving

me a a phony a phony which is a fake yes uh coin and then she refused to take it back

the coin was real but it was it was not a british coin it was from another country so

you you do find this sometimes foreign coins or a coin or a type of denomination of money

looks similar but it isn't valid you can't use it in in the country where you live so

yes so this lady gave steve a foreign coin that you can't use and then what did you do

what did you say you were going to do i said i was going to boycott the farmers market

and i did for about 12 months that's usually what i do if somebody crosses me uh if you

say somebody crosses you it means that they've done done you some wrong or done something

to upset you yes i would rather than complain and moan i will just not go back there yes

for a period of time minimum six months i did it with a whole town once yes steve now

steve really does like to boycott things i think sometimes steve is over sensitive don't

cross me because you're out perfect you do boycott things i remember a few years ago

when we lived in wolverhampton you you decided to boycott parking in wolverhampton so that's

that's another thing that you hate we won't talk about that because we have to be careful

today because we had we had the uh sentence game far too late last week so we have to

be careful but you do boycott things yes very quickly i got two parking fines in wolverhampton

within about three months one was for being four minutes over totally unfair and the other

one was because i hadn't noticed that they'd changed the times when you could park so i

said that's it that's it i'm not parking or shopping in wolverhampton for 12 months and

i didn't here's an interesting word drove me online snub snub snub so you decide to

snub someone you you avoid them you stay away from them you you you say no i'm not going

to talk to that person i'm not going to go to that supermarket anymore you might pass

a person in the street and you see them and you just see them and you just go snub at

them i'm not talking to you yes so you might boycott a supermarket you might avoid talking

to someone maybe they have upset you in some way you snubbed them have you ever walked

past somebody in the street and you know them could be a neighbour yeah somebody at school

somebody at work and they just walks they they know you're there they just walk straight

past you and ignore you and pretend you're not there they look straight ahead or something

they snub you snub uh and there are people like that aren't there who want to speak to

you sometimes and then when you see them another time they don't want to speak to you and then

uh that's it when they they do that to me they've crossed me and that's it i won't talk

to them ever again they are out but but i must admit even even your way or your method

is nothing nothing near nowhere near me i can really i'm pretty good at snubbing people

i can i can push someone from my life very easily can't i so i think i'm actually worse

than you sometimes you do it to members of your own family but they do deserve it i'd

like to do it to mine but i haven't got the courage no it does take courage to to shun

or boycott someone or something i know it's child some people say it's a bit silly bit

childish but um somebody crosses me that's it they're out as i always say careful adults

adults adults are just big children grown-up children so just because we are adults doesn't

mean that we always act or behave like adults sometimes we can act very childish i think

so oh people are talking about uh music in italy oh okay i think it was uh i can't remember

who it now was it andy that said he didn't want to go to italy because there were too

many singers okay i think it was andy that said that so are people literally in italy

walking around the streets just singing all singing opera everywhere that's what we assume

we've seen that all italians are constantly singing operas just as we assume all welsh

people are constantly singing songs about going down the mines

we always assume all welsh people can sing because they've got a reputation yes for being

good singers as do italians i can safely say that we have been to wales many times and

there are not people walking around the streets singing about working in the coal mine alessandra

says that um andy must have said something verdi is amazing yes absolutely amazing

oh i said i thought you were talking about verdi i thought you were talking about the

color green verde uh his requiem is one of my favorite pieces of music okay good i've

been using lots of uh adverts on the telly okay i'm not sure what this has to do with

boycotting things but there you go so you might give you might give the cold shoulder

to something so when you boycott something you avoid it you push it away you shun that

thing you give it the cold shoulder you give it the cold shoulder so it is a way i suppose

nowadays you might find that people are more sensitive to certain things or certain issues

or maybe things that that people say so you might find yourself being boycotted boycotted

you are given the cold shoulder interesting nobody wants to have anything to do with you

if uh if you are given the cold shoulder you might be sent to are you going to say that

oh okay then well i'm not sure if that is the same as boycott no but yes yes there is

a phrase a person who is shunned or pushed away or maybe if you start avoiding someone

we can say that you send them to coventry yes coventry is a is a city in the uk and

i don't know why we say that but we we often say uh if you don't want to speak to anybody

anymore if they've upset a lot of people uh then you send them to coventry it just means

you don't speak to them at all for a period of time i think it might relate to to the

second world war when of course coventry was heavily damaged by bombs i'm not sure where

that phrase comes from but yes so you avoid something as a protest so i think this is

a good definition of boycott boycott you avoid something as a protest so something that a

supermarket or maybe a big company they do something that upsets you and you think no

no i don't accept that i am going to boycott that thing you avoid something as a protest

so that's the reason why people often boycott things they boycott them for a particular

reason yes your local supermarket might do something that you don't like they might be

purchasing products for example from a country where they have very bad animal rights or

something like that or they might be purchasing things from a country with with bad human

rights and you don't like the fact that the company is doing that so you say i'm not buying

anything from that company i'm going to boycott them and then you might get a lot of other

people to do that you might go to social media and a movement might develop and then the

company under pressure from so many people boycotting them may change their policies

yes and thus you could win and then you'd be able to go back and shop with them again

so it does happen quite often when we are talking about large companies maybe a place

that you have to go to or visit to actually get the service that you are paying for so

quite often supermarkets maybe large companies maybe an actor an actor or actress says something

and a lot of people disagree with it so they will boycott that person's movies or they

will they will not go to see them if they are appearing i don't know in a play on the

stage although there's no chance of that happening at the moment maybe somebody could look up

why coventry the phrase sent to coventry where it originated and why it says this um we can't

remember and uh sergio's asked that um andy styles says yes verdi's requiem is awesome

it eats yes i think that's one of the things you see sometimes these phrases can come about

and and even though people use them a lot they they actually don't realize why they're

using them so i think it relates to the second world war i think it has something to do with

the fact that coventry was was heavily heavily bombed george why would you send people there

yes well because it's it's an it it's there's nothing left of it i don't know what we don't

know so oh no i i i'm not saying i do know we better fatigue i'm not sure but i think

make a stand or take a stand against something so you are you are actually taking action

against a company or an individual by avoiding them or you will stay away from a certain

thing or a certain company you you make a stand or you take a stand do you know why

we say boycott why do we say it tell us mr i will tell you did you know that the word

boycott actually comes from a person's name a real person called captain charles c boycott

who lived between 1832 and 1897 and he was an irish land agent and the people who were

renting the land from him they were all being overcharged so they decided to stay away or

they refused to pay and so their action against him became known as boycott you boycott something

so that's why we say the word boycott it's actually a person's name well there's a famous

cricketer in this country uh called jeffrey boycott jeff boycott uh so his name i wonder

if if he is a descendant of that particular individual because it's a very unusual name

uh certainly in this country did you say italian uh like irish irish so um yes it's it's not

a popular name in the in in in the uk but we do have a famous cricketer well he was

famous in the sort of 1980s i think 1990s okay some people don't some people don't agree

with boycotting things some people think it's childish or immature so for example fedor

hello fedor if we boycott famous people after their statements then we don't that we don't

like this means that the famous people do not have the freedom of speech i think this

is one of the things that has definitely happened this year people have become very sensitive

to what other people do or say or maybe of course they want to take away another person's

right to to have the freedom to say what they say so it is a very hot topic at the moment

isn't it yes uh and of course it's easy to do now that uh now that we're not visiting

very many shops i would say we've it would be very difficult to boycott amazon at the

moment because where would you get anything from i think i think amazon companies big

companies like amazon i think yes i think you're right even though i don't always deal

with amazon there are other companies that i like to deal with that aren't connected

to amazon so i do try quite often to support other companies that are not directly connected

to amazon so i don't always shop from amazon sometimes i will go there last week i did

something because they had their special their special offers last week so i did buy something

something small so yes i do i do it sometimes but i think maybe boycotting things may sometimes

be a good idea it might be a good idea it depends what the reason is alessandra sings

in a choir okay uh and i wonder if you've sung vadi's requiem alessandra um icing in

a choir of course we can't sing at the moment because the choirs are all yes so is your

choir still going because here in the uk all the choirs we can't go back uh haven't been

able to since march because of the risk of catching coronavirus is very high if you're

singing in a choir because everybody's breathing and and aspirating droplets it's aspirating

inspirating desperate it means something's coming out of your mouth yes okay anyway steve

thermos that means well that i would imagine that means it sounds like that's a greek or

italian word for heat yes well temperature or temperature i think i think the word temperature

is somehow derived from that so these particular products keep your drinks hot okay for a long

time or cold is this a commercial no but just explaining what thermos do you have anybody

watching is that brand thermos used in your country can you buy of course in a cold country

you want to keep drinks hot okay uh and this is well you can keep drinks hot for about

six hours in one of these anyway shall we have some before it goes talking about thermometer

an excerpt from one of my lessons and this is an interesting lesson because this is all

about a subject that i'm not very good at understanding all will be revealed in a moment

and then after this we are going to play the sentence game

you happy i hope so in today's lesson we are going to take a look at some things that we

use in our everyday life something that comes in very useful when we need to add up or subtract

or multiply in today's lesson we are going to talk all about numbers

the word number derives from the latin numerous and the numbers we use today originated in

arabic form during the 8th century the original design of the numbers was based on geometric

shapes the amount of angles used in each character showed the number value so number one has

just one angle number two has two angles number three has three angles and so on these arabic

characters have changed very little over the years and are now used by everyone everywhere

there are many ways to express a number it can be expressed as a word as a symbol as

a figure a number represents a particular quantity or amount you count using numbers

calculations use numbers this is called mathematics or maths for short in american english it

is pronounced as math numbers express quantity numbers express dimensions the height width

length circumference and even the appearance of an object can be expressed using numbers

the weight of something or the mass of an object is also expressed as a number there

were 200 guests at the wedding party.

the tree is 10 meters tall the field is 100 meters wide the pole is 15 meters long the

circle is 10 inches in diameter the house has two doors and eight windows i weigh 11

stone time and distance are also expressed using numbers how long something takes to

occur and when it occurs and how far away something is or the distance between one thing

and another can all be expressed using

numbers

by the way this is uh this is um milk coffee coffee with milk in it it's very nice it's

very nice i've got to say i don't usually like it very sweet but it's the one thing

coffee i have to have sugar in coffee yes not in tea but i've never been able to give

it up in coffee because it just doesn't taste the same of course coffee is very different

as people have been saying in different countries coffee is very different ours is quite watery

in our country and not very strong we don't tend to drink expressos as much yeah i think

as in places like italy france uh our coffee is very quite watery there is a there is a

type of there is one called i'm sure there's one called dead eye have you ever heard of

dead eye coffee no dead eye it's a type of well it's a type of coffee but as i understand

it that's quite a strong coffee as well i think that's very strong somebody's giving

are talking about garden implements uh olga bought an electric trimmer um but she's not

sure her neighbours like it well if it's electric it's going to be a bit quieter than a petrol

of revenge in england apparently yes it can be it can be so some people do it on purpose

i think so i think sometimes now i'm not a paranoid person not like him but i'm not i'm

beans and grind them up and then you make your coffee and then you leave it the next

day that those coffee grounds smells like cigarettes the coffee grounds smell a bit

like cigarette ash i think and i think the reason for that is uh obviously um cigarettes

is something that which is burning uh it's it's essentially burning tobacco which is

a plant and coffee of course is uh beans that have been roasted so it's not surprising that

they smell similar but coffee grounds you you smell those the next day if you leave

them that smells like cigarette ass yes even a person's breath as well so when a person

drinks coffee they have a certain smell on their breath and sometimes it's it smells

like tobacco yes but it isn't but it isn't it's coffee because coffee is burnt beans

and cigarettes is burnt leaves isn't it so it's not surprising there must be similar

chemical compositions there steve king english says your your father seems like he likes

everything he did he was my father knew how to live he was a wild one your dad yes yeah

but you know what i guessed his soul i mean i'm a goody two shoes compared to my father

how sensible you are so a fool might be a person who does things on impulse you see

so an impulsive person is a person who does something without thinking about it whereas

an angel might think carefully or maybe they will avoid any unpleasant situations or things

that might be risky so fools rush in they will do things they will be reckless where

others such as angels they fear to tread so that yes you're saying that there's a situation

you don't know what that situation is and uh some people might prefer to

have a look and see what the situation is and weigh it up carefully before going in

whereas other people might not they might just dive straight in and it could be dangerous

yes uh but that could refer to relationships i think that's probably referring to relationships

anything but you can use this expression uh yeah say you you just met somebody anyway

and uh you you fall instantly in love with them and you marry them within a week uh you

would say the person that was probably a fool and that somebody else might uh might take

positively yes if you say oh i think nothing will be get back to normal again lots of people

are saying this at the moment about brexit okay there's a lot some people are saying

brexit is awful the country will never be the same again we'll be poorer et cetera et

cetera no one wants to know us uh that's negative thinking it could be realistic although those

things are pretty correct they are correct by the way but i think actually i think it's

better i'm not a positive thinker am i you are not you are a negative thinker anyway
