today i hope you are feeling happy i hope you have a spring in your step

and a big smile on your face here we go again yes it is another

english addict with myself mr duncan for those wondering who this strange

looking man is on your screen right now my name is

duncan i talk about english i teach english we discuss

the english language we talk about all sorts of things

in fact i am not your usual english teacher there are some different

things going on here and one of the biggest

differences of all is that we are live right

now yes i know i am a little bit late today

i'm slightly late because i've been rushing around

i've had a busy week i had my birthday on wednesday and then yesterday we went

away for the day we had a lovely day oh

i i will say one thing the weather this week

has been amazing we have had some wonderful weather

some dramatic weather as well it's it's been it's been a very mixed

week for weather to be honest we've had all

sorts of weather it's been hot it's been humid we've also had a lot of

rain a lot of thunder and lightning at night

but yesterday we had a super duper day i will tell you more about that

later on here we go again yes we have made it all the way to the end of the week

it's friday

yes we've made it all the way to the end of the week and i hope you are feeling

good today

the weather today is not too good it's gloomy cloudy

it's still quite hot as well however we are indoors you may have noticed already

i am in the studio did you see our little

video message that we left yesterday showing you where

we were we had a little trip yesterday i will be honest with you one of the

things i've been really missing during this crazy period of time

is the ability to to drive off and enjoy the scenery

of a different place now i know what you're going to say mr duncan you

already live in a nice place however it is also nice to explore it is nice to

get out and about and that's what we did

yesterday so steve has been off this week

as well so we took the opportunity yesterday

to go to one of our most favourite places can you guess where that place is

well if you watched yesterday's message you will know exactly

where we were yesterday we went to one of our most favourite places a

place called lake vernwe which is

in wales it is the most amazing place a beautiful scenic part

of wales and also we went we went on a little walk

as well and we took in some of the beautiful

landscape and also some of the beautiful sights

as well and here you can see this is something that i recorded

yesterday on my mobile phone as we were walking along one of the

small rivers near

to lake vyrnwy and you can see the sun was out yesterday and everything was

looking lovely very tranquil there were some people

around there were a lot of visitors i must be

honest with you there were many visitors yesterday of course we were also

visiting as well so i'm not complaining because i know

that we were also visiting that particular place and of

course as i mentioned there he is oh

hello mr steve we can see you but what is over here oh let's have a look shall

we ah i see there is

the famous lake vyrnwy dam so there it is the dam that sometimes

is overflowing with water but as you can see there

because we've had quite a lot of sunlight a lot of hot sunshine

and also a lot of rain as well i was surprised

i was very surprised that there was no water flowing

over the edge of the dam but there it is the dam

at lake vyrnwy looking very nice we did also manage to get something to

eat as well we went to a nearby place

to get some coffee and then later on we went along to the hotel that we

normally stay at if we are visiting this place we

normally stay over however at the moment things are not

normal so instead we actually sat outside

so the hotel actually has well what they've done is they have

created a large picnic area so people can still

visit the hotel and they can sit outside and

they can enjoy some food outdoors

and you will notice once again mr steve sitting at one of the tables there he is

so as you can see there were tables outside

for us to sit at and also they were selling food

outside as well so we were able to sit down

quite comfortably and also quite safely as well so there was

social distancing taking place as you can see all of the seats

and the tables were quite far away from each other

and that was what we did yesterday afternoon

after having a lovely walk and here is mr steve

have a look closely at mr steve can you see him sitting

by the lake so there he is yesterday wearing his shorts now i know

some people get very excited when they see mr steve shorts

i don't want you to get too excited but i know

that many people do get rather excited when they see mr steve

in his shorts and of course i was also there as well sitting

by the lake as well

and that is actually where we recorded our little message yesterday so we

actually recorded a short video message yesterday

i don't know if you saw it but it is now available on my youtube channel

and as i mentioned there is also social distancing taking place

as well and you can notice from this particular sign in fact

this was something that we found on our table

so you can see that wales has some very strict laws

concerning social distancing so just like we used to do

in england

two meters apart is the distance that you have to keep

however i think here in england it is now one meter

but in wales the laws are slightly different

so you can't meet in large groups you have to stay far away from other

people you have to keep your distance however

it was safe to sit outside and enjoy a meal

or maybe some light refreshments which is what we did yesterday there you can

see so that is where we actually sat

yesterday and we had a lovely trip we went to one of our most favorite

places lake vernon we and that is one of the

photographs i took yesterday looking through the dam into the

distance i always think that tower the tower in

the distance always looks a little bit like rapunzel's

tower the tower in which rapunzel was kept prisoner i always think so

so there it was that was what we did yesterday we are

actually going to do a little bit more of that

tomorrow i've just noticed something my camera

has stopped working how strange i've had some strange problems recently

with my camera equipment and i've just noticed

that my camera has just stopped working how strange

there are some very strange things happening at the moment

in fact there might be a problem with my live stream right now

something has actually gone wrong

please excuse me if you can't hear me there is a reason for it and that is

because my live stream has stopped working

i knew there was going to be a problem today i really did

i had a horrible feeling that something was going to go

seriously wrong and guess what it has it has gone wrong

oh dear that's not good

i think it might be all right now are we back

no i still don't have my main camera it stopped working completely

something terrible has happened here

you might be able to hear me but unfortunately i can't operate my

computer it has literally stopped working

by the things you say or do there is some jiggery pokery going on

the action of being deceitful your behavior is deceitful

if you deceive someone it means you lie you say something that is not true you

say something that is not real something that you are trying to

make another person believe we can say that it is jiggery pokery oh

i like that one this is often used in british english by the way

here's another one degenerate to degenerate if you

degenerate it means you weaken you become worse maybe if you have a

certain condition maybe an illness or maybe you have

something that is happening because of your

age something will slowly over time cause you

to become weak and frail you degenerate you weaken

you worsen your situation slowly becomes worse you begin to become

weak because of something becoming worse

quite often quite quite often old age can cause you

to degenerate or a serious illness here's another one oh cacophony

cacophony i like this word another unusual

word but we do use these words i am often asked mr duncan do we really

use these words in english yes we do cacophony there it is

it means disharmony so something that is creating

maybe a situation where people are becoming anxious

or upset or maybe angry at each other we can say that there is a cacophony

cacophony quite often this will express disharmony people are not

getting along they are disagreeing they are becoming

and you also help each other normally in the way you live or the way

so this one is a negative word this particular word that i'm showing you now

is negative we often use this word to describe a person who is bitter

or they are spiteful they have maybe a bad attitude towards other

people rancor i like this word

rancor if you have rancor you have bitterness spite you have

hatred you express bitterness towards another person rancor

excerpt from one of my special lessons when i

went to a certain place and if you were

watching earlier you will know that that place is

very special very dear very special to me it is also

a very beautiful place

hi everybody this is mr duncan in england how are you today

are you okay i hope so are you happy i hope so here i am on my

short summer break taking a well-deserved rest

at lake vernwe in wales and you are very welcome to join me

lake vernery lies to the south of the snowdonia mountains

in an area known as montgomery show just like many parts of wales it

consists of wide open countryside with lush green hills and many cattle

farms

the lake itself makes up a large part of the nature reserve and

country estate

the nature reserve is a haven for tourists

hikers cyclists and bird watchers who come to this beauty spot each summer

to get away from life in the busy towns and cities for a while

the village is very small and only consists of a few

houses a cafe some gift shops and an information center

the lake itself is artificial it is in fact a reservoir which was

constructed towards the end of the 19th century

construction of the large dam began in 1881

and it took seven years to complete

the feat of constructing this enormous structure took many months of designing

keeping the millions of gallons of water captured would need a very tall and wide

building indeed it would also have to be strong

there are two very noticeable features at the reservoir

the first being the tall tower which from afar looks a little like something

from a fairy tale the purpose of this tower is to strain

the water before it makes its way along the aqueduct an aqueduct is a pipe

or channel used for transferring water over

long distances the aqueduct from lake fernweh is mostly

hidden underground the straining tower is not

open to the public the other very obvious feature at lake

fernweh is of course the dam

this is what keeps all the water in place

the dam is 44 meters high from the bottom of the valley

and is 39 meters thick at the base water is constantly being released from

the dam so as to prevent the nearby river vern

wheat from drying out

between five and ten million gallons of water

is released through this valve every day when the water level of the reservoir

becomes too high this whole side of the dam is

transformed into a huge foaming waterfall as the excess water is

steadily released so as to prevent the surrounding land

from becoming waterlogged

it is common for people to confuse the word dam

with dyke they are actually not the same thing

a dam is used to keep water in it captures the water while a dike is

used to keep water out it is often used as a defense against

the sea when the tide is unusually high

wales is well known for its stunning scenery

its expansive green valleys and the rolling hills

play host to countless wild animals but no creature is more commonly seen

here in wales than the sheep

the distinctive white dots created by the many flocks

are a common sight here especially during springtime

when the lambs are born this period is called the lambing season

what you really need if you want to learn english you need

your basic vocabulary you need to have some words that you can use in your

sentences and then you start off with simple

sentences easy sentences and then slowly

something you need to do over time you listen
