that's how I felt this morning however I've had a nice wash and a shave

the new government came into power here in the UK there have been many things

that have been discussed and one in particular is the the choice of weather

to pay your television license now you may or may not know this but the BBC

famous around the world the British Broadcasting Corporation is actually

funded by the taxpayer so each person has to pay a certain levy or charge to

actually be able to watch the BBC programmes in fact you have to it is the

law if you avoid paying the TV licence or television licence you will be fined

so a lot of people are protesting at the moment they feel as if they don't want

to pay all the money I think it's about how much is it about 158 pounds per year

to watch BBC television however don't get confused it isn't a subscription so

it's not like Netflix you actually get the TV programmes anyway however you

have to pay a license you have to pay a license every single year to watch BBC

programmes however many people feel as if they don't want to pay to watch the

BBC for various reasons some people don't even watch BBC TV programmes so

used in English also the way of listing numbers as well especially when it comes

to listing things in a certain order maybe you take part in a race and the

so this is an overall view of a big subject the subject is numbers

in today's lesson we are going to take a look at some things that we use in our

everyday life something that comes in very useful when we need to add up or

subtract or multiply in today's lesson we are going to talk all about numbers

the word number derives from the Latin numerous and the numbers we use today

originated in Arabic form during the eighth century the original design of

the numbers was based on geometric shapes the amount of angles used in each

character showed the number value so number one has just one angle number two

has two angles number three has three angles and so on these Arabic characters

have changed very little over the years and are now used by everyone everywhere

there are many ways to express a number it can be expressed as a word as a

symbol as a figure a number represents a particular quantity or amount you count

using numbers calculations use numbers this is called mathematics or maths for

short in American English it is pronounced as math

numbers Express quantity numbers Express dimensions the height width length

circumference and even the appearance of an object can be expressed using numbers

the weight of something or the mass of an object is also expressed as a number

there were 200 guests at the wedding party the tree is 10 meters tall the

field is 100 meters wide the pole is 15 meters long

the circle is 10 inches in diameter the house has two doors and eight windows I

reverse can also be done by dividing numbers with each other this is called

division we use the divide symbol to show this for example 50 divided by 5 so

we express this as 50 divided by 5 equals 10 it is common to replace equals

with is when expressing a calculation we can say that 5 plus 4 is 9 all of these

calculations can be described as basic equations expressing large numbers in

English 100 is 10 times 10 1000 is 10 times 100

1 million is 1000 times 1000 1 billion is 1000 times 1 million 1 trillion is a

million times a million so if you were the richest person in the world with 90

billion dollars it would take 8 and a half thousand years to count up to 90

billion that is mind-blowing

numbers are very useful for making lists you can make a list of items while

numbering them and writing down each item with its number next to it to

number something is an action when counted numbers always come in a certain

order this is called numerical order for example the order of numbers between 1

and 10 is always the same you can count up from 1 to 10 or you can

count down from 10 to 1 expressing position with numbers is often done as a

way of announcing the results of a contest or competition dates contained

within each month are also expressed in this way let's have a look at one month

in particular August has 31 days and each day is numbered in the following

so something that is ordinal an ordinal number is actually a way of stressing or

presenting things in a particular order as they arrived or as they came through

maybe you are saying when something occurs for example the date so when we

talk about the date we often talk about the day and the month so each new day

that comes along has a number so we often use ordinal numbers to describe

each day so I thought it would be interesting to take you through the

first 20 of the ordinal numbers so we will do this very quickly very quickly

it won't take long so first we have first so when we talk

about something being first it is number one so as a cardinal number cardinal

number one ordinal number first so maybe you are

talking about the first day of the month we might say the first of March or the

1st of February the 1st of November so the first or maybe in a race the person

who won the race came first and also it's interesting to see how it is

expressed when we write it down so that is how we write the ordinal number down

and that is of course the spelling first and then we have well I'm sure some

people will know what comes next second so you can see once again how it is

expressed so second the second of March the second person to come into the room

second first second the cardinal number is one the ordinal number is second you

are second you are coming in after the first person after the second person you

are third and once again please notice how

it is expressed don't forget to make sure you make a note of that because

that is very important so when you write it down as a date you might use this way

of expressing it third the third so number three as a cardinal number is

third when we are listing things as ordinal numbers ordinal just means order

they are in a certain order once again number four is expressed as

fourth fourth and once again please note the

it is written there a lot of people get this part wrong

many people write this incorrectly they often put the wrong the wrong letters so

as an ordinal number 11th so maybe it is the 11th hour or the 11th day by the way

there is an expression in English we talked about doing something at the 11th

hour it means you are doing it before before time runs out

or before the finish occurs so just before something ends or finish finishes

you do something at the 11th hour you suddenly find a solution to a problem at

the 11th hour great expression that a good expression the next one I really

like the next one because it is the date of my birthday 12th again quite often

people spell this wrong so you can see their 1212 so number 12 is expressed as

an ordinal number 12 so for example mr. Duncan's birthday is on the 12th of

August 12th pachu says 1330 15 and 50 are difficult to identify whilst

listening I agree with you but once again sometimes even if a native English

speaker is talking to another native English speaker maybe over the phone

they might say 15 but the person he is 50 so sometimes it can happen between

anyone so it doesn't matter if you are learning English or if you are a native

speaker quite often you

find that there can be mistakes made you might miss hear what the person has said

maybe you've been together in a relationship for a very long time and

if there are too many E's in this word 1 2 3 4 17th however that is the correct

might be described as xx hour in the day so there it is xx so number 20 if it is

we are trying to work something out when we are maybe working out a number

will often add numbers subtract numbers divide numbers or multiply numbers so to

add means you put one number with the other and then you come up with a total
