Why does English have six different ways to spell  one sound?

Ah. We spell it with the letter A, like in father. Father.

We spell it with two As, like in bazaar. Bazaar.

We spell it E-A, like in heart. Heart.

We spell it with just an E, like in sergeant. Sergeant.

We spell it O-U-G-H, like  in cough. Cough.

And we spell it with just an O, like in  body. Body.

Six different spellings of the same sound.
