video we are going to learn how to use intonation  in english specifically we're going to talk about  

falling intonation or low intonation which is  very important part of using intonation in english  

so first let's talk about this what is intonation  it is the natural rise and fall of language  

a lot of different languages use intonation to  convey different meanings with whatever they're  

asking or whatever they're trying to say and it is  necessary to use intonation especially in english  

intonation can help you understand the  mood of the conversation and it can help  

you understand if someone is finished  speaking or if someone asked a question to you  

there are actually three kinds of intonation  in english and they are high intonation  

middle intonation and low intonation english  speech naturally uses all three tones  

sometimes you might hear the word monotone and  monotone means that the speaker only uses one tone  

usually the middle or the flat tone  it's also important to understand  

that intonation is different from word stress  word stress focuses on only one word and we'll  

talk about word stress in an upcoming video  intonation is the natural rise and fall  

of speech in a sentence and let's focus on  falling intonation in the rest of today's video  

so what is falling intonation falling intonation  is when your voice falls to a low pitch  

at the end of a statement or  usually at the end of a statement

and it's very important to know and understand  what does falling intonation communicate  

it communicates certainty you are telling  a fact or you believe that you are right  

or correct it also communicates completion you  are done speaking or finished with the statement  

and the other speaker in the conversation can  respond to you so let's go ahead and let's look  

at an example of falling intonation  here's a sentence john plays guitar  

he began playing guitar in middle  school he currently owns one guitar

you can see here that guitar uses  

falling intonation because it is a  complete statement john plays guitar

in the next sentence the final word school also  has falling intonation because it is another  

complete statement or fact he began  playing guitar in middle school  

and the final sentence guitar also uses falling  intonation again he currently owns one guitar

it's very important to pay attention  to the final word in each sentence

in the first and third sentences  the word guitar has two syllables  

so the falling intonation happens  on the final syllable guitar guitar

school has one syllable so the falling  intonation happens smoothly school
