Sarah today's video is part of our 30 days  to powerful vocabulary series in this series  

we explain important vocabulary words each day  to help you understand and speak better about  

different topics in English today's topic  is world problems now let's get started

there are many problems in the world today and  they are often part of our conversations it can  

be difficult to talk about world issues in English  so today let's learn some helpful vocabulary we  

can use to talk about world problems our words  today are environment Natural Resource poverty  

exploitation and epidemic our first word today is  environment the environment is all the land oceans  

air plants and animals that make up our natural  world when someone mentions the environment when  

talking about world problems they are referring to  problems in nature do you think the environment is  

important our next term today is natural resource  a natural resource is something from nature that  

we use for our own purpose for example trees are  a natural resource because they are something in  

nature that we can use to make things like houses  paper and furniture some other natural resources  

are water minerals oil soil and even the animals  we eat another word we often hear when talking  

about Natural Resources is shortage a shortage  means that there is not enough of something for  

example in the desert there is a shortage of water  let's talk about our next word poverty poverty is  

a noun and is the state of having little or no  money and few or no possessions poverty means  

extremely poor if someone does not have much money  or any money and cannot buy things like food a  

home or medicine they live in poverty let's use it  in a sentence many people in the world today still  

live in poverty or I think poverty is a serious  problem our fourth word today is exploitation  

this is a high-level vocabulary word that we can  use as a noun exploitation or as a verb exploit  

exploitation means to treat someone unfairly in  order to benefit from their work it also means  

to use someone or something to achieve one's own  purposes here is an example of exploitation if  

someone has a very successful business but pays  their workers so little that they live in poverty  

that is exploitation child labor and sweatshops  are also examples of exploitation our last term  

today is epidemic this is a noun that means  something bad usually a disease that spreads  

very fast across a large region or across the  world right now we are living through the kovin  

19 epidemic it is a disease that spread very fast  around the world some other famous epidemics were  

the AIDS epidemic and SARS let's use it in  a sentence we need to prepare better for  

the next big epidemic this word can also be used  to talk about other bad things that spread fast  

for example we could say there is an epidemic of  cheating on exam in my school okay students that's
