learn English to talk about friends and friendship first let's look at some

words for talking about friends the first word is companion a companion is a

person or animal that another person spends a lot of time with or travels

with a companion can be a person or it can be an animal like a dog or a cat

here's some examples of a companion dogs are great companions for many people her

sister was a great traveling companion the word companion is often used in the

context of travelling like with the phrase traveling companion the next

friend word is acquaintances and acquaintances is a person one knows a

little but the person is not a close friend you do not know the person well

here's some example sentences for the word acquaintance I ran into an old

acquaintance the other day he is not a friend of mine he is only an

acquaintance the next friendship word is buddy buddy is used informally and is

usually used to describe a friendship between males but could also be used to

describe female friends here's some examples of using the word buddy

he is a good buddy of mine hey how's it going buddy you can also use buddy to

talk about more than one friend like this I know Bob and Tom they are my

buddies you can also use this short form of buddy which is bud he's a good bud of

mine still the most common way to describe a

friend is simply to use the word friend we can use friend with certain words to

refer to the degree of friendship or how much of a friend the person is to do

this we use words like good clothes and best for example she is a good friend of

mine he is a good buddy she is a close friend he is my best friend first let's

look at some different types of casual friends acquaintances and acquaintances

is a person one knows a little but the person is not a close friend

next a colleague a colleague is a person that someone works with

classmate someone a person attends school with

now let's look at some close friends a childhood friend is a friend that a

person had when both of them were children family friend a person who has

friendly relations with the whole family a family friend is a friend of yours and

a friend of your family now let's look at some phrases for talking about

friendship the first phrase is hit it off if people hit it off they like each

other and become friendly as soon as they meet for example we like the same

kind of movies so we hit it off right away

she and I hit it off immediately because we have similar interests

the next friend phrase is to hang out to hang out with someone to spend time with

someone or to spend time somewhere this phrasal verb is commonly used to talk

about spending time with someone in a casual and relaxed way for example I

hang out with my friend Bob on Saturdays who do you hang out with I hang out with

Bob and Tom hang out can also be used to talk about where someone spends time for

example we hung out at the library last Saturday where do you usually hang out I

hang out at the library the next friendship phrase is get

together get together is a phrasal verb that means to meet socially with one or

more person for exemple let's get together next weekend let's get together
