challenge. I'm teacher Sarah today we're going to learn words and phrases about

motivation let's get started

motivation it is what pushes us and what makes us want to make changes in our

lives some synonyms for motivation are drive ambition and initiative today

we're going to talk about five words and phrases related to motivation our terms

for today are to be motivated to intrinsic extrinsic incentive and

enthusiasm our first term today is to be motivated to if you are motivated to do

something this means that you have a strong will or a desire to do something

often certain events cause you to feel motivated to make a change in your life

let's use this phrase in some sentences I had another bad day at work I'm very

motivated to get a new job

after seeing that live concert last night I'm motivated to learn to play

guitar after weighing myself this morning I'm motivated to exercise and

lose weight as we can see in these sentences very positive or very negative

events can often motivate us to change our next term today is extrinsic we see

the prefix X in this word which means outside and indeed extrinsic means

coming from or operating from outside when we talk about motivation

motivation refers to behavior that is driven by external rewards such as money

extrinsic so intrinsic means coming from or operating from inside intrinsic

motivation refers to behavior that is driven by internal rewards in other

words the motivation to do something comes from within because it is

naturally satisfying to do so there is no external reward like money only the

internal reward of feeling good let's say I don't get paid much money but I

love my job I work hard because it feels good to see my students improve I don't

personally get a reward from this like more money but I feel happy and

satisfied and that internal feeling is my reward this is an example of

intrinsic motivation let's use it in a sentence

my hobby is learning about history I don't make any money from it I just love

to do it I feel great when I learn new things

I'm intrinsically motivated now let's talk about the word incentive incentive

is a noun that means a thing that motivates or encourages one to do

something an incentive is similar to a reward let's use this word in a sentence

the teacher gave the students stickers as an incentive to clean up their desks

my boss offered me a pay raise as an incentive to keep working here the

rising cost of gasoline is an incentive for people to drive less in all these

examples the incentive is the reward for the behavior our last word today is

enthusiasm enthusiasm is a noun and the adjective form of this word is

enthusiastic enthusiasm is intense and eager enjoyment interest or approval

we could also use the synonym excitement let's use the noun and adjective forms

of this word in some sentences he has great enthusiasm for his job

this means that he really loves and feels excited about his job he does his

job with great energy and happiness so he has enthusiasm for his job

she is really enthusiastic about cooking this means that she loves and feels

excited about cooking she loves to cook and to talk about cooking so she's
