lesson. Today's lesson is using follow-up questions to improve your English

conversation skills. Let's go! Let's begin with what follow-up questions are:

follow-up questions are questions you asked another person to find out more

information about the same topic. For example, if the topic is your favorite

food, you might ask a question like: when you

usually eat your favorite food? How often you eat your favorite food? Why is that

your favorite food? Depending on the person's answers you can then ask

different follow-up questions to find out more information about the topic.

Using follow-up questions is super easy. Let's look at our examples again: when do

you usually eat your favorite food? How often do you eat your favorite food?

Why is that your favorite food? These examples all begin with "WH" question

grammar of WH questions. Remember our WH question stems are: who, what, when, where,

why, and how. Normal English conversations often use follow-up questions like these

because people want to find out more information about one topic before

moving on to another one. By getting comfortable with asking and answering

these questions you are preparing to have a normal conversation in English.

And it's very easy to do! Just use the WH question

stems to start off your sentences. Here's an example topic: let's think about two

people talking to each other. Person 1 and person 2: person 1 says "do you like

to watch movies?" Person 2 can answer something like "sure I like to watch

movies." The topic is movies, now look at some follow up questions on the topic

that use WH stems: What what kind of movies do you like? When when you usually

watch movies? Who is your favorite actor? Where where do you like to watch

movies? At home? At a theater? Why do you like this movie? Why do you like this

actor? How! How many times do you watch movies each month? How many times you

watch movies each week? Okay, so we're using the topic of movies,

and again we have two friends talking about movies. So here's an example of how

a conversation might go: Hey do you like to watch movies? Sure, I do.

What kind of movies do you like? I really like action movies. How often do you

watch movies? I watch movies at least once a month. Oh, that's interesting. Where

do you usually go to watch a new movie? I prefer to go to the big theater near my

house. Let's look at another example using the

topic of hobbies. We're going to use WH-questions to find out more

information and make the conversation a bit longer. Do you have any hobbies? Yes I

like drawing. Oh really? What do you like to draw?

I draw superheroes and action scenes. How long have you been drawing? I've been

drawing since I was eight years old. When do you usually draw? Anytime, but I

especially enjoy drawing in the afternoon after work. Here's how to

practice your own. First, think of a topic. Then,

write down some different questions using the "WH" stem words. Who, What, When,

Where, Why, How. Next, write down some answers to those questions. Finally,

practice reading the questions and the answers that you wrote. Okay, that's the
