English now back to the lesson let's start the lesson with two powerful word

families meaning words that get their meaning from a root word the first word

family comes from the verb employ to employ means to make use of something

I am employing a tripod to record this video but to employ also means to hire a

person to work for you I employed a local man to mow my lawn when you are

employed you have a job from this verb we also get the nouns employee meaning a

person who has been hired for work and an employer employer which means a

person who hires others for work if I owned a business and I hire you to work

for me I am an employer and you are my employee from employ we also get the

noun employment which means a relation of employer and employee between two

people and if we add the prefix you in unn meaning not in front of the words we

get unemployed meaning you don't have a job and unemployment which means a state

where people do not have jobs so countries often talk about their

unemployment rate meaning the number of people or percentage of people who do

not have jobs another word family comes from the verb apply which means to make

a formal best to be hired somewhere I am applying

for work this means I am trying to find work somewhere from this verb we get the

noun application which means a document you use to try to find work I had to

fill out a job application we also get the noun applicant which means a person

who is applying for work our next vocabulary word is

qualifications qualifications are those qualities or accomplishments which make

you suitable for a job for example if you are looking for work as a teacher

your qualifications might include a college degree teaching experience and

formal training to be a teacher if you're looking for work you always want

to have the right qualifications so you might hear do you have the

qualifications for this job another important vocabulary word for

job seekers is resume this word looks like another verb resume but it is

pronounced resume because English borrowed this word from the French

language and kept it a little closer to its original pronunciation in French a

resume is a document you use to apply for work which lists all of your

qualifications for a job on a resume you might include your name contact

information your education history your job history and any relevant skills or

qualifications you might have the resume is an important document for beginning

any job search so once you've applied for a job and sent your resume you might

be chosen for an interview a job interview is a face-to-face

discussion where a potential employer asks questions of a potential employee

as a way to see if that employee might be a good fit I need to wear a nice suit

for my job interview tomorrow and our last vocabulary word is an important one

for anyone looking for a job salary a salary is how much money you get paid as

an employee a salary is something that is paid according to a fixed regular

amount usually people are paid a weekly or a monthly salary sometimes the word

wage or wages is used instead of salary I want to find a job with a good salary

or with good wages this means you want to find a job that pays you well so to

also the word apply from which we get the words application and applicant and

the other words we learned were qualifications resume salary or wages
