How to be a good online learner. Hi I'm Eric and today I will share

10 tips to make you a better English learner

when studying online. My friends here at English Danny channel

have invited me to share good ideas to make you a great student.

Who am I? I'm an English teacher with a lot of experience. I also help

teachers with my own youtube channel called

best online English learner you can be. The

first tip is the most important your time online

is not for learning. Most students sit in front of the computer waiting

to let their teacher teach them new grammar

vocabulary and skills, but not you. You are better than them. Great

learners use class to practice skills. They talk, ask questions,

and improve their speaking while the other students sit there passively

waiting for the teacher. You are improving

much faster. Whenever teacher asks the class a question,

do your best to answer. Don't be shy. Don't worry about mistakes. Answer

and speak as much as possible. Use every second to practice with your

classmates. During activities, the more you speak,

the quicker you will improve. Your time online

is for practicing skills, not for sitting down and waiting to be taught.

Number two, prepare before class. Ask your teacher what

pages you can prepare for class. Ask him what you will do before class

starts. Ask him what topic you will study. Then,

find vocabulary online. Ask him what grammar you will be

studying. Look it up online and learn some

examples. If you don't understand something, write

it down. When your online class starts. make sure

to ask your teacher for help with the things you didn't understand.

That is what they are there for. You are spending a lot of money for their

knowledge. Let them help you. That's their job

during class. You want to practice the expressions and

vocabulary that you have learned before class.

Now, is the time to use it and make it part

of your natural vocabulary. Learning a language

doesn't just happen. You need to make time for it

and plan it when you fit it into your life.

Preview lessons before class and review after. If you do something twice, you are

far more likely to remember it. Number three: class is a competition,

stand out. The worst students are the ones who sit in the back and

hide when the teacher asks a question.

Studies show that the best students are the ones that sit

in front and answer questions, even if they

are not sure. Don't worry about making mistakes or looking silly. The

best language learners are the ones who are unafraid.

They try and use the language even if they make mistakes.

In my classes, the rule is that no one is shy. I

expect the students to answer regardless if they make mistakes or not.

Be that student online, ask your teacher questions.

Use the message function to add your ideas

to the discussion. most people are afraid to stand out.

if you want ordinary results be ordinary if you want great results

you need to be extraordinary don't be shy

don't be afraid of the spotlight embrace it

that brings me to number four use the functions in zoom

skype google meet and other online platforms

there are many functions for participants to use

message the teacher if you don't understand something

use reactions to show how you feel thumbs up smiley face thumbs down

interact with your teacher and other students

by staying actively involved you will be more focused and it will be easier to

concentrate on the work so use the program functions

to engage with your teacher and classmates every class needs

leaders be the one that takes the lead help your friends if they struggle send

them a message to explain things if they

don't understand they will start looking

towards you as a leader and because you take the

lead you will also improve much faster

than other students that sit quietly in the back number five record yourself

most platforms have the option to record yourself

if you can't do that record yourself during class when it is your time to

speak with your phone if your teacher is

giving an important lecture record it

and go over it later to see how much you understand most

language learners have studied using repetition

many of the best learners watch a tv series

like friends first they watch it with translated subtitles then they watch it

with english subtitles and finally they watch

it without subtitles to challenge

themselves those are the learners that improve the

fastest and achieve mastery you can do the same

with your online classes record yourself so you can listen to your own

pronunciation it will sound strange listening to

yourself at first but later you will notice

mistakes you make words you struggle with and unnatural

fillers in your sentences like um

and are so record yourself to improve your fluency and

pronunciation and record your teacher in class to

improve your listening and understanding number

six take notes even if you record your classes you

should also get in the habit of taking notes

during class often teachers would give extra explanations to students about

grammar vocabulary and pronunciation most

students think they will remember it but most don't it is up to you to be

a good student and make notes on what you learn during class

don't take the risk of forgetting you'll be

a much better student if you get into the habit

of taking notes when you review vocabulary

read the notes as well to internalize it do this during online classes but

offline as well number seven find a motivated partner

learning a language is a social experience

you are learning to communicate so it makes sense to practice with other

people try and find someone that has the time

and commitment to study hard someone you can practice with someone to

motivate you when you feel down and another

set of eyes that can teach you something new set another online meeting

with your friend to review what you've done in the previous class

and to prepare for the next one by having conversations

and practicing vocabulary a good partner will help you learn a language twice

as quickly as you would alone practice and become comfortable using

the language for the lesson ahead and reinforce

what you've learned with them number eight

use a variety of resources the beauty of learning online is that

you have the whole language of the world at your fingertips

on the internet besides only using your textbooks and

your teacher as a source research topics grammar

and examples on the internet if you can use

a variety of sources you will find more examples

of how to use a word or expression in context you will be exposed to

more sources and examples that will make connections between your experience

and the target language you are learning learn real english and not just

textbook english although textbooks provide graded lessons they are not

always natural more variety and authentic sources will help you

master the language quicker number nine

develop all four language skills simultaneously

during online lessons most learners focus on listening and practice

speaking skills with their teacher but there are

four english skills that you need to master

listening speaking reading and writing by practicing

all these skills during a lesson you will grow in confidence

and ability quicker than doing only one at a time how can you do this

while learning write down difficult words and expressions listen for

exact information when your teacher speaks

and also read from the source to have a clearer understanding

of what is being taught most classes use some kind of workbook so follow

along and read well use every opportunity

to get you used to the target language in conversation speaking time

is very precious and you should make the most out of it

when the teacher asks students to say something or repeat

after them don't only give a simple answer they ask for

make sentences longer add adjectives and adverbs don't give a single

sentence answer explain yourself thoroughly many teachers will be so

happy if they see a student putting in extra effort and they will pay more

attention to you during class if they know they can rely

on you to give good answers they will call

on you even more which means that you get more practice and will improve

far quicker than you normally would and number 10 set up an

environment that promotes learning there was a study where they placed

university students in dorm rooms for one set of students

they asked them to turn on a light at their desk

every time they studied the other group studied however they wanted at the end

of the semester the researchers compared the results

and guess what the students with the light

did overwhelmingly better than the students who

did not what can we learn from that should you switch on

your light when you study no it means that a good routine

will improve your chance at success if you consistently create the same

environment to study in quiet distraction free at a similar time

every day your brain will be conditioned to identify that time as a period to

study and to focus to take in more information

and open your mind to focus on the content

for longer periods by completing your work in the same conditions

repeatedly you'll establish a routine find out what environment works best

for you and when you have online lessons try to copy it every time clear your

space make it tidy and remove anything

that might distract you a cluttered room will lead to a cluttered mind

try to find a quiet space to hear carefully and ask your family for their

support during classes not to disturb you

turn off your phone to avoid social media
