this is so frustrating i

can't whoa what happened you  look like you're about to

explode i don't get it Jake i can't  understand English when I hear it  

i watch movies listen to podcasts even follow

conversations between native speakers but when  it's my turn to talk my mind goes blank i can't  

find the words i hesitate and when I do  say something I sound like a robot damn  

oh I see i know you're experiencing the  classic I understand English but I can't  

speak it problem yes and it's driving  me crazy i study hard i know a lot of

vocabulary but when I try to  speak I freeze what's wrong with

me nothing's wrong with you my friend  this happens to a lot of English learners

but the good news is that there is a

solution really tell me because I feel like giving  

up please wow wow no giving  up listen speaking is a skill

you can't just know how to speak English my dear

friend what I mean is you  have to train for it like an

athlete train for it i don't get  it but I already study English

studying is great but  speaking is different you need

to you need to practice in a  way that activates your speaking

skills let me give you some of the best tips  to improve your English speaking i'll use the

board first think in

English one of the biggest problems  is that your brain is translating

everything from your native  language to English that is not

good because this slows you down  and makes it harder to speak

fluently yes you are right  that's exactly what happens to me

i try to form sentences in  my language first and then  

I translate them but by the time I do  that the conversation has already moved

on exactly so the solution is start thinking in

English even when you're alone  describe what you're doing in

English for example if you're making coffee say  in your mind I'm making coffee i need to add sugar  

i like my coffee strong don't use  your native language um that makes  

sense but what if I don't know how to  say something in English great question  

instead of stopping and translating  try to explain it using simple words

for example if you don't know the word for

refrigerator you can say it's  the big cold box where I keep my

food this forces your brain to think in  English and over time it becomes natural

the second thing you have to do  is speak out loud even when you're

alone another problem is that  you don't get enough speaking

practice you need to train  your mouth to speak English

but I don't have anyone to practice with  all the time that's fine you can practice  

speaking alone read text out loud describe  your day or even have imaginary conversations

it might feel silly but it really works believe

me um so I should just talk  to myself that's what you

mean yes and not just in your head say the words  out loud your mouth needs practice moving in  

English if you only listen and never speak your  tongue doesn't get used to the sounds that's the

thing i never thought about that but would I sound

weird maybe but who cares the goal is to get

better if you do this every day  soon your brain and mouth will work

together the third thing you have to do  is slow down and focus on pronunciation

sometimes when I try to speak fast  my words get mixed and I sound  

terrible that's because you're rushing  speaking fast doesn't mean speaking

well but native speakers talk

fast yes but they didn't start  that way when kids learn a

language they speak slowly first and  then they get faster you need to do the

same so I should speak

slowly yes slow down and focus on pronunciation  make sure you're saying every word clearly  

then as you get more comfortable  your speed will naturally

improve so quality over

speed exactly if people can't understand  you what's the point of speaking

i feel like I've been approaching  English the wrong way this whole

time don't worry but I will  give you one more important tip

listen use the question and answer  method that is really really useful

that sounds interesting sometimes I  don't know what to talk about i feel  

stuck that's why you should practice  the question and answer method believe

me you ask yourself questions and answer them  it's like having a mini conversation with yourself

um all right like what kind of

questions simple ones um for example what did I do

today what would I do if I won the lottery  what's my favorite food and why oh this helps  

me create sentences and think in English cool  exactly you can do this every day and soon the  

speaking will feel natural wow thank you i feel  like I have so many new ways to practice now

see you were never bad at speaking  English you just needed the right

techniques yes i'm going to start  thinking in English slowing down  

and practicing every day that's the  spirit look if you stay consistent in  

a few months you'll feel way more  confident when speaking English
