Hello. This is Gill at engVid, and today we have a lesson on words that end with an "s"
0
0
8680
00:08
or words where you sometimes add an "s" for a particular reason and for different reasons,
1
8680
8740
00:17
because I found that sometimes people get a little bit confused about whether it's a
2
17900
5920
00:23
noun or a verb, whether it's a plural because it has an "s" on the end, that sort of thing.
3
23820
6160
00:30
Also, there's sometimes a question of how to pronounce the word if it has an "s" on
4
30240
7680
00:37
the end. Sometimes I don't hear people pronouncing the "s", or there may be other issues about
5
37920
7880
00:45
it. So, this lesson is to clarify all of that. Okay.
6
45800
5420
00:51
So, first of all, nice and simple, we add an "s" usually on a plural noun. If you have
7
51620
10320
01:01
a noun like "girl", more than one girl will be "girls", and "boy" becomes "boys". "Dog",
8
61940
9120
01:11
"cat", "cats", etc. So, most plurals in English, you just add an "s". There are a few irregular
9
71340
11380
01:22
plurals where you don't, like "foot" and "feet", things like that. "Tooth" and "teeth", but
10
82720
10440
01:33
most nouns you add an "s", so obviously that's what happens, just an "s" at the end. "Schools",
11
93400
10280
01:43
"cars", "trees", "horse", "horses", "case", "cases", "box", "boxes". But you can see that in this
12
103680
11240
01:55
line, you have to make an extra syllable because "horse" ends with an "s" sound already. The
13
115280
8740
02:04
singular ends with an "s" sound, so you have to say "horses". You have to put the extra syllable
14
124020
8380
02:12
"s" to be able to get another "s" sound in because you can't just say "horses". You can't hear the
15
132400
9860
02:22
extra "s" clearly enough; it all blends together. So, "horses", "case", "cases", "box", "boxes".
16
142260
11860
02:34
Okay? And I notice that people whose native language... Certain native languages like
17
154120
8400
02:42
Italian, for example, where plurals in Italian don't involve adding an "s",
18
162520
7820
02:50
the plurals are formed in a different way. They might be an "e" at the end or an "i" at the end
19
170340
6660
02:57
to form a plural. So, I notice perhaps with some Italian speakers, even if they're reading from
20
177000
8100
03:05
printed material and they're reading words ending in an "s", which are plurals, they may not actually
21
185100
7880
03:12
pronounce the final "s", and you have to really learn and make yourself pronounce that final "s"
22
192980
8060
03:21
when you're speaking in English or reading aloud in English. Okay? So those are the plural nouns.
23
201560
6740
03:28
Okay? And then the other main reason for adding an "s" is in the third person singular
24
208640
9460
03:38
of a present tense verb. I'm saying "present tense" because, again, some people get confused
25
218760
9160
03:47
and they think it applies to the third person singular in all tenses, but it doesn't. It's
26
227920
8520
03:56
only in the present tense. Okay. So, just to show the difference, "I lose", "she loses",
27
236440
10280
04:06
and again, we have to have an extra syllable here for "loses" because "lose" ends with an "s" sound,
28
246940
9220
04:16
so we have to do "us" to get the extra "s" sound in to make it clear. So, "I", "I" is first person
29
256720
10760
04:27
singular, so no "s" there. But "she", "he", "she", "it" are third person singular, so you have to
30
267480
10300
04:37
add an "s" in the present tense. Okay? "I miss", "he misses", again, the extra syllable there.
31
277780
9620
04:48
And then just to give you some that don't have to have the extra syllable, just to show what that...
32
288260
9200
04:59
"She jumps", so just the "s" at the end and make sure it's clear and pronounced. And also to show
33
299500
8780
05:08
how this only applies to the present tense. Here we have the past tense, so "I jumped",
34
308280
7220
05:15
"she jumped", no difference. Okay? And then in the future, "I will jump",
35
315500
8720
05:24
"she will jump", there's no "s" in the future. Okay? It only applies to the present tense,
36
324360
8140
05:32
for "he", "she", and "it". Okay? So, that's plural nouns, third person singular, present tense verb.
37
332860
12680
05:45
And just one more thing to mention, there's no apostrophe.
38
345700
5980
05:53
Sometimes even with native speakers, they see an "s" at the end of a word and they think, "Oh,
39
353300
10200
06:03
I need to put the apostrophe before the 's'", but the apostrophe is only there if it's a
40
363840
7360
06:11
contraction, an abbreviation, if something's missing. So, you would only, for example, say
41
371200
7980
06:19
"the dogs asleep", meaning the dog is... So, the apostrophe represents the missing
42
379180
20660
06:40
"i", that's the only time that you would put an apostrophe. So, with plural nouns,
43
400200
8380
06:48
also with verbs, you don't put an apostrophe for jumps. The apostrophe means there's a missing
44
408620
7440
06:56
letter, like "is", usually "is". So, that's completely different, meaning the dog singular,
45
416060
10220
07:06
the dog is asleep. And then the only other time that you would use an apostrophe
46
426460
8200
07:14
would be a possessive, something belonging to the dog. So, you might say "the dog's
47
434660
9920
07:24
dinner", for example. "The dog's dinner. I need to prepare the dog's dinner", meaning the dinner
48
444580
10220
07:34
for the dog, the dinner belonging to the dog. So, there's also the possessive form,
49
454800
7580
07:42
just as you would say "Mary's house", "Mary's house", "John's car", "John's car", meaning the
50
462720
11580
07:54
house or the car belonging to Mary, belonging to John, the dinner belonging to the dog.
51
474300
7320
08:01
So, that's the only two times where you would use an apostrophe, but not with a plural noun.
52
481960
8660
08:11
If it's "dogs" in the plural, then it's "dogs" like that, no apostrophe. And if it's a verb,
53
491360
7860
08:20
"She jumps", then that's the third person singular ending of the verb. "She jumps",
54
500120
9160
08:29
"He jumps", "It jumps". You don't put an apostrophe with it. Okay.
55
509280
7020
08:37
So, I hope that's been a useful explanation, clarification for you. And if you'd like to do
