Learn the Suffix -OUS 🔍English Vocabulary with Jennifer

Hi everyone. I'm Jennifer from English with Jennifer. Here's a

quick lesson about the suffix -ous. You'll see variations, like

joyous, religious, courageous. As you can see, a suffix is a word part.

More specifically, it's an ending. When we stick it at the end of a word,

we form an adjective. The suffix -ous means that someone or something has a

certain quality.

A joyous occasion is characterized by joy.

A religious text is related to religion, and a courageous act is done out of courage.

Why does it help to understand word parts?

Well, first of all, it helps you recognize the part of speech.

And second, it can help you guess the meaning of a new word.

Also, in this case, you can learn a stress pattern.

With -ious and -eous, we stress the syllable before the suffix.

religious

ambitious

nutritious

delicious

gorgeous

courageous

outrageous

advantageous Now let me quiz you. If something is

religious, it's related to religion. Right?

So, if something is nutritious, it has good...

nutrition.

Next, if you have an advantageous position,

then you have the...

advantage.

If someone's actions are outrageous, then these actions cause...

outrage. If your co-worker is ambitious, they're

driven by...

ambition.

Let's increase the challenge and look at a word family.

Choose the right word to complete the sentence.

Mike's claims are hard to believe. They raise some suspicion.

Yolanda doesn't always tell the truth. I suspect that she's lying about what happened.

If you enter a bank with a hat and sunglasses,

you may look suspicious.
