How to Sound Confident Speaking English

hey naturals this is a short and super helpful  english speaking lesson for you if you want to  

sound more confident i get this question a lot  not only how can you sound more fluent when  

you're speaking english but how can you sound  more confident and why is confidence important  

well i think it's worth noting that when you  sound confident people tend to have more trust in  

you they tend to give that some power so they're  more likely to follow your suggestions and perhaps  

this would be helpful in your work if you're  looking to advance in your career and you want  

people to really trust that you know what you're  talking about and there have been many studies  

that sometimes people who are more confident  even if they're not as smart or well informed  

they advance more quickly in their careers because  simply they're confident and people tend to trust  

this feeling this confident feeling that they  exude so now we know why it's important to seem  

confident or to be confident but how how do you  project this feeling of confidence how do you make  

others believe that you are a confident  person well of course part of it is in  

your body language are you slouched do you  sit up straight your posture is important  

part of it is in your volume and your tone do you  tend to whisper your weird words and talk very  

very softly and sometimes stutter or do you  speak in a loud and clear voice and take your  

time expressing yourself do you stress important  words and vocabulary is super important so i want  

to share three things to stop saying if you  want to sound more confident let's start with  

maybe maybe is not a confident word and i  hear a lot of english learners using this  

maybe it's because you don't feel confident maybe  it's a cultural thing because you're translating  

from your native language and it's very common  to use the word maybe this word in and of itself  

is not incorrect but it projects doubt and it  does not show confidence what it shows is that  

you are unsure of yourself which is the opposite  of confidence so if you feel like saying maybe  

stop yourself and we can completely delete it from  your sentence or you could think of other words to  

say instead of maybe for example instead of saying  maybe you could say let me check that and get back  

to you so if you're not sure you know it's okay  to not have all the information you don't have to  

fake or lie in order to give some information when  you're not ready you can simply say in my opinion  

you should not say i'm sorry well it's okay to say  you're sorry in appropriate circumstances but many  

of us overuse the word sorry for example uh sorry  i'm late sorry i didn't mean to step on your toe  

sorry i don't know the answer um you don't always  have to say you're sorry sorry i didn't like your  

picture on instagram it's just not necessary  to apologize for everything but of course if  

you sincerely need to apologize it's okay you  can say you're sorry you can say you apologize  

but i think you follow me here that some people  just apologize for everything just for their mere  

existence and this does not exude confidence so  the next time that you feel like apologizing or  

saying you're sorry just stop and check yourself  and ask is this really worthy of a sincere apology  

if so then go ahead if not then stop yourself  and instead of saying for example sorry i'm  

late what if we turned this around and said  i'm glad i could make it better late than never  

so this is a completely different way of  looking at things and expressing ourselves  

so start thinking about how you could either  delete too many stories from your english  

and maybe express yourself in a different way one  last thing about saying you're sorry definitely  

definitely definitely do not say you are sorry  for your poor english skills it's okay to make  

a mistake in english native speakers make mistakes  all the time in english instead of saying sorry my  

english is so bad you could say thank you for your  patience because i'm still improving my english  

it's the same idea but expressed in a much more  confident way now finally uh the third word that  

or phrase that i'd like us to stop using in order  to sound more confident is excuse me so this is a  

very basic phrase but it can sound unconfident if  you use it too much and this is really the key we  

need to balance our vocabulary and i find a lot of  english learners using using these three words or  

phrases way too much maybe sorry and excuse me so  when do we use excuse me maybe if you want to get  

someone's attention or basically for apologizing  like if you bump into someone you might say excuse  

me like i'm sorry i bumped into you so instead  of saying excuse me or sorry in that situation  

you could if it really was a serious bump  into someone you could say oh are you okay  

or if it's not such a serious bump you just  brush them or something you don't have to really  

say anything okay if you're saying excuse me to  get someone's attention there are other ways that  

could be more confident ways to get someone's  attention sometimes people don't they don't say  

excuse me they just start talking probably you've  noticed that the more confident people you know  

just start talking and they expect other people  to listen so you could try that you could also  

try um a noise like an attention getting clearing  your throat or a word like well or hmm before  

you start talking well i think or hmm that's  interesting i have an idea to share about that  

so instead of excuse me which is sort  of apologizing or asking permission  

i want you to jump in and claim your space in  a conversation because you deserve it and other  

people want to hear what you have to say so no  more apologies no more excuse me or sorry or  

maybes let's be more definite and let's be sure  and confident in yourself and trust me i know that
