feels so strange I must be honest I feel rather weird at the moment because it is

not my normal streaming day I feel a little weird a little strange but then

again we are living in weird and strange times here we go again it's another

English addict episode 59 coming to you from the birthplace of the English

language which happens to be oh my goodness

hi everybody this is mr. Duncan in England how are you today are you okay

I hope so are you happy I hope so thank you very much for clicking on me today I

hope you are feeling good and happy boom so it is another live stream it is

myself for those who don't know what I am doing why are you here you strange

man I'm here on the Internet that amazing invention which is helping

so many people around the world at the moment many many people are saying thank

you thank you Internet because of you I am able to carry on with my work or

maybe I can entertain myself during these very strange times so thank you

very much once again to the Internet I think to be honest with you I think the

internet deserves a round of applause so well done the Internet for keeping us

all occupied busy distracted and hopefully entertained and even educated

Oh mr. Duncan is that what you are going to do today are you going to educate the

world and I know no I have no idea some people say watching my video

lessons really does teach them a lesson about what they should and should not

click on when they are watching the Internet so here we go as you can see

today I am talking to you from in front of my lovely fake bookcase I've noticed

over the past few days when Pia people are talking through their webcams

especially on the news so if a person is being interviewed on television they are

sitting in front of their webcam quite often their webcam review will be them

but also quite often behind them there will be a big pretentious bookcase with

lots and lots of volumes and all sorts of tomes oh I love that word

tome I don't think anyone uses that word anymore to describe a book tome so as

you can see I am standing in my studio in front of my SuperDuper pretentious

fake bookcase and another thing I've noticed sometimes on the television news

I've noticed that some people actually promote their own books so they might be

sitting in front of their bookcase but if they happen to be a person who writes

books quite often they will place their own books just behind them so they can

be seen by the viewing audience so I'm in my studio sadly I'm not outside today

I will show you why I'm not outside it's a little bit cloudy a little bit dull

it's it's also incredibly windy today it is so windy outside so I decided not to

go outside today so I'm not in the garden however we will be seeing some

lovely views of the garden including this oh there it is right now you can

see there is a pigeon sitting in the tree towards the left of your screen

there is a little pigeon taking a rest so there is the live view right now that

is what England looks like at the moment cloudy cool and very windy so the wind

is blowing quite strongly you can also see lots of lovely blossom is

well I will point to the blossom so you can see it because it's looking rather

nice today so let's have a little look at the blossom shall we oh there it is I

can see it now Thank You mr. Duncan for showing us where it is I always try my

best there it is so on the screen right now

you can see all the lovely blossom blowing well blowing in the wind to be

honest there is a song by the way called blowing in the wind the answer my friend

is blowin in the wind the answer is blowin in the wind and also you might be

able to see my little heroine so there is the heron guarding my garden that is

my little guard taking care of my garden to make sure everything is alright the

wind is blowing you will you can also see my lovely daffodils and also the

Heather as well but look at that you can see the branches on the tree are really

blowing around it is indeed a very windy day here in the UK I hope you're feeling

good I hope you are feeling happy I know we are living through very strange times

very bizarre moments of time indeed and I am here to make your moments of time

even weirder even stranger than normal can I just say I haven't had any

breakfast I had no breakfast today I've only just remembered I was so busy

preparing my livestream I've actually forgotten to have breakfast so please

excuse me you might hear from time to time my stomach making a very strange

sound so if you can hear a strange

noise during my lesson that is not me that is actually my stomach wondering

where is the food there is no food going into it so it might start complaining

yes it is episode 59 of English addict normally I'm here teaching English

I've been doing this for such a long time can you guess how long I've been

doing this for here on YouTube I've been doing this for ages for ages if we say

that we've been doing something for ages it means we've been doing it for a long

time maybe you are waiting for your friend to come and meet you you might

say where is my friend I've been waiting here for ages and then when your friend

arrives you can say where have you been I've been waiting here for ages so when

you say for ages you mean for a very long time by the way you can have

captions if you want to watch my live captions you can all you have to do is

press C on your keyboard right there and of course you can find captions on your

mobile devices if you go into the settings on this live stream so you have

the opportunity to watch not only me live but also you can have live captions

how many songs there are connected to isolation however I have

managed to find another 10 so I will be showing you those a little bit later on

language can connected to giving advice so if you are giving advice if you are

offering advice if you are making suggestions to someone to help their

situation better or maybe if you are offering advice to a person who needs

help then we will be looking at those words a little bit later on as well

caption was for that name fortunately I spotted the problem and I corrected it

so sometimes when you say people's names with the captions

sometimes the captions will accidentally write very rude words

for which I apologize just in case it happened a few moments ago

things are not going well maybe things are not going right in your life

to make the best of a bad deal sometimes you have no choice unfortunately you

say that quite often you have to try and find something positive when there is a

bad situation something positive something that makes you smile may

remember every cloud has a silver lining it really does so however gloomy things

seem you can always find a silver lining there is always something positive that

did it last week I mentioned that you could get in touch with someone maybe

and if a friend so maybe there is someone in your life with whom you

haven't spoken to for a very long time so maybe you can get back in touch with

someone maybe you can become reacquainted re acquainted so if you

react waned it means you get back in touch you become familiar with something

that you lost touch with you lost touch so every cloud as it has a silver lining

there is always something good that comes from every situation good or bad

and of course oh I like this one this this one is one of my favorites always

always look on the bright side of life do do look on the bright side things

could always be worse there are always people around you who are suffering more

in that group so which group is he in then is he in a famous group I know

there are lots of k-pop groups BTS is very famous here in the UK because they

they have appeared on television here in the UK so BTS one of the many k-pop

groups are very well known here in the UK now they have a lot of fans here in

the UK hello to Anna Pico again mr. Duncan has mr. Steve prepared a trick or

joke yesterday he didn't he did not because he knows better because

sometimes I'm not a big fan of jokes practical jokes I know I have a good

sense of humor I like to think that I have a very good sense of humor but

sometimes hmm sometimes I I don't see the funny side I don't

ziba says yes that's true when you go to the shop you have to wait

in the big queue in London says ziba well fortunately I am NOT in London I am

in a very small rural area however nearby there are some large supermarkets

fortunately we also have a little local shop so there is a small local shop here

in Much Wenlock which is the place where I live

so there are lots of small shops around this area but also some big big

supermarkets as well how many types of jaffa cake are there in the

supermarket's well there are two flavors of Jaffa Cake there is orange and also

at the moment there is a special one there is pineapple it has a pineapple

flavour but to be honest with you I don't like pineapple

I'm not a big fan I don't like pineapple however I do like orange very much but

unfortunately as I said yesterday sadly my jaffa cake box is empty

I have no jaffa cakes unfortunately however I'm still trying to look at the

bright side at least I'm feeling okay and of course I can be here with you

today so yes I'm feeling rather happy about

that we are going to take a little break so I can arrest my voice and then we

will be back we have another ten songs connected with isolation also words and

phrases connected to advice coming up a little bit later on now we are going to

take a look at an excerpt from one of my full English lessons there are many

lessons on my youtube channel and this is an example of one of those lessons

mr. Duncan's full English you'd better not have a problem with that or I'll get

the missus to sue you there misses their wife

they say that eating fruit is good for you there are so many different types of

fruit to choose from however for me my favorite fruit has to be the mango it's

sweet aromatic juice contained within that soft and succulent flesh is

irresistible to me I first started eating mangoes regularly whilst I was

living in China the mangoes there grow in the southern region which has a warm

climate a perfect place for them to grow sadly here in England the climate is not

suitable for mango plantations they have to be imported from warmer climes this

particular mango has come all away from Ivory Coast in northwest Africa mangoes

are available in most supermarkets here although their quality can vary this

particular mango is nice and ripe it is ready to be eaten if you want to

know how ripe a mango is just give it a squeeze I can tell that this mango is

perfectly ripe and is ready to be eaten do you like eating fruit which type of

fruit is your favorite can you see the pink flower behind me it is called a

rhododendron whenever I think of this flower I always find myself remembering

my time at school not because we grew them there but because whenever we had

to sit in English spelling test they would always ask us to spell the word

rhododendron as you can see it is not a very easy word to spell and I always got

it wrong still the rhododendron does look nice when it's in full bloom it's

nice to look at but not so nice to spare

here is another lovely plant however unlike the rhododendron this one is

still growing I've put in this particular plant for two reasons

first it has a lovely appearance and second it has a special name that caught

my eye for those who don't recognize it this is

a Senora carbuncle Asst I like the fact that Dunc is in the name

this plant is also known as an artichoke thistle as its name suggests the flowers

formed on this plant are large and thorny the main flower itself is a

majestic purple I really can't wait to see this plant come into bloom not least

of all because bees butterflies and birds are attracted to this plant

mr. Duncan what are you doing I'm watching this

part I'm waiting for the water inside it to boil but why haven't you got anything

better to do I want to see the pretty bubbles in the water as it comes to the

boil you bonehead haven't you heard of that well-known

proverb which proverb do you mean many a Mickle makes a muckle a stitch in time

saves nine look before you leap don't look a gift horse in the mouth

no mr. Duncan the proverb is a watched pot never boils

if you wait for something to occur it will take longer for it to happen or at

least it will seem to oh I see so in fact it is better for me to walk away

and leave the pot to boil in its own time let whatever is happening happen

when it's ready exactly sometimes waiting for a thing to happen can be

frustrating it is much better to forget about it and let it happen in its own

time remember mr. Duncan a watched pot never

boils

squeeze squeeze squeeze no matter how much I squeeze this tube of toothpaste

nothing will come out it would be safe to say that this toothpaste tube is

empty do you notice how I pronounce the word tube the first part of the word

sounds like chair it is common in British English to pronounce the T use

sound as two other words include tune tutor tuba there are of course

exceptions to this the word tunnel is still pronounced with the hard T sound

in American English the hard T is often used in most words beginning with T U

words such as tube tune tutor

tuba are all pronounced with the hearty this is one good example of the civil

differences that exist between American and British English pronunciation

take a close look at this branch can you see what's happened here

it looks as if it's being pecked at by something well it has these marks were

made by a woodpecker a great spotted woodpecker to be precise this branch has

been adopted as a feeding area by the bird it picks nuts from the nearby bird

feeder and brings them to this point where it places the peanut into a small

hole so as to make it easier to peck at

the spectacle of a woodpecker feeding this closely is nice to watch however

over time this feeding routine will erect Leiby damaged the tree the branch

will eventually die as the bird digs deeper and deeper into it so there is an

upside to this in that I get to view something that is very unusual in my

garden while the downside is that my lovely dams and tree will end up being

severely damaged I don't blame the woodpecker after all it's got to eat

have a look at some words connected to giving advice so the thing I want to

talk about now is giving advice during these strange times you may have noticed

that lots of people are actually seeking advice and of course there are groups of

people who are giving advice so advice is something that can be given or taken

so you can give advice you can offer advice and of course you can take advice

advice offer advice accept advice so quite often we use the word advice to

mean anything that is giving you information that may be helpful you

inform someone so to be informed is to know something to know something so

sometimes information can actually be advice you might at the moment be

searching for advice on what to do during this strange period of time you

see so you want something to inform you you need advice so something that you

hear on the television or see on the television or read in the newspaper it

will inform you it is giving you some information and quite often information

is advice it is a form of advice I suppose also you could use the word

suggestion well a suggestion is something that is offered as help so

maybe a suggestion might be an idea or may be the solution to a problem so you

can offer a suggestion may I suggest that you learn five new words every day

if you are learning English so that is my suggestion I am suggesting this thing

to you so that is my suggestion lots of words connected to advice we also have

recommendation as well you might give a recommendation so to recommend is to say

that something is good or something is worth doing or seeing this is my

recommendation this is the thing that I'm saying to you this is my advice so

my recommendation is the advice that I'm giving to you maybe

I might recommend a good English Channel on YouTube mr. Duncan in England he's

very good so that is my recommendation even though it's actually me counsel you

might seek counsel so if you seek counsel it means you are looking for a

person to offer you advice so you look for counsel also you might counsel

another person so maybe you are the one giving the advice and the other person

is the one receiving the advice counsel so when you counsel you are giving

advice you are seeking an advice you are looking for counsel I like that word

it's a very interesting word and we will look at that word again later on

guidance well once again we can have guidance a suggestion advice so

sometimes guidance is actually a form of advice it is something that is showing

you the correct way to go I offer you guidance you take guidance so when you

guide someone you are showing them the way you are showing them the correct way

to do something or maybe you are simply giving them some useful ideas you are

giving them guidance guidance regulation now this is an interesting one it does

look as if this one should not be in my list it does look odd because normally

regulation is a sort of rule or maybe something that exists in law that you

have to follow however regulation can also be advice so

maybe during this time you need advice about what is allowed and what is not

allowed so things you can do and things you

cannot do during this time and quite often we will talk about regulations so

a regulation is a type of law or maybe a rule that must be followed however it

can also be something that is very useful when you are searching for advice

what can I do during this time what can't I do

so yes a regulation can be a type of advice we also have pointer pointer

well I suppose most people think of this

you in a certain direction so pointer so we often think of point as being

something that is showing the way and that is the reason why we use the word

pointer so a pointer is literally guiding you in a certain direction so

the pointer is the advice so maybe a piece of advice that a person gives you

is their pointer you are pointing them in a certain direction by giving them

advice what else do we have oh here's something else maybe you give

someone advice as I said earlier quite often advice is something that is given

and taken so you give someone advice you offer your suggestion you advise someone

you advise a person you give them your advice so if you advise someone it means

you are giving them a suggestion or maybe your own thoughts or maybe

something that you have had experience of in the past

now you are offering your advice I always say that a person who has a lot

of experienced quite often is a very good person to go to if you need advice

for example I don't want to use myself but I'm going to so I've been teaching

English for many years and in the past I've given advice to other teachers so

sometimes I do get emails and messages from other teachers asking for advice

because I've been teaching English for many years many many years you make a

suggestion suggestion I love that word sometimes it can be difficult to say

that word suggestion suggestion you make a suggestion so when you suggest

something it means you are offering your idea or your thought so maybe a

suggestion can be an idea of where to eat or maybe where to go to see a good

movie or maybe you might suggest a good website for learning English mm-hmm I

mean me of course so there are lots of things that use you can suggest so you

suggest something where shall we go to eat I suggest that we should go to that

new Italian restaurant around the corner I hear the food is very good so you

suggest something you make a suggestion you offer guidance so when you offer

guidance you are giving advice you offer give you press your advice to another

person so we often offer advice that's not easy to say by the way off

you often offer we will often offer advice or guidance as a way of giving a

person some suggestions or maybe something that we think would be a good

helpful advice we mean something that is useful you point them in the right

direction you point them in the right direction

maybe you guide someone so once again you are giving help you are giving

advice you are giving guidance you will guide someone maybe a person has just

bought a new computer and they don't know how to use it maybe you are an

expert on computers in which case I could

actually do with your advice as well to be honest so if you guide someone you

are giving them help you are giving advice maybe you are helping a person do

something that is very difficult or maybe something that they have no

knowledge of you guide someone you give them guidance in life quite often and

this is something that happens quite a lot in the USA one person can support

another in their life so maybe you have a person near to you or maybe a person

who works with you who can give you advice on how to do your job or to

organize your life let's face it sometimes life can be very hectic so a

person who offers you support as you go through life or maybe as you are

learning a new skill there is a word for that of course you offer advice and

guidance over a period of time so you are offering the person lots of advice

lots of suggestions maybe you are guiding them through their life or maybe

through their career you mentor someone ah so there is the magic word that is

the word I was leaning to there it is do you

mentor so there is the word mentor you mentor someone and in this case we are

using it as a verb so in this particular case mentor

is being used as a verb we are using it to say that you are doing that thing you

mentor someone so that is one way of using it also the person giving the

advice is the mental so once again you are the mentor and in this case we are

using it as a noun so the mentor is the person also mental is the verb that is

saying that that is what you are doing you are giving advice thank you very

specialist advice in your life if you want some special advice something that

can help you with your life then maybe you have to go to a professional a

person who does it for a for a living it is their job so a counselor might offer

therapists psychiatrists so psychiatrists offer counseling for

people who have problems thinking or organizing their thoughts a person who

can't cope with the pressure of life so quite often they will go to see a

counselor so the counselor will put their mind at rest or maybe they will

teach that person to think in a different way so that is what a

counselor does they offer professional advice I hope that

you are unwinding you are chilling out you are calming your thoughts you are

putting your feet up to unwind to chill to relax

this particular area was the subject of one of my earlier lessons and it is a

place that I'm very fond of besides sites there are various sounds that can

help you to relax a gentle stream flowing or the calming sound of waves

lapping on the shore or the sound of water streaming over a dam

many people consider sleeping to be the most effective way to unwind some people

like to have a short sleep during the day this is called a nap it is common

for people to take a short power nap during the afternoon do you like to take

the 1980s he had a very big hit with well

let you trapped by Colonel Abrams I think that is a good song for this

period of time as everyone is feeling a little bit trapped in their homes so at

number one of our top 10 list there it is trapped by Colonel Abraham's so there

it is another 10 songs I can't believe I was I was actually able to find 10 more

whose son is Marilyn Martin very interesting so Marilyn Martin can I just
