back once again look at the beautiful flowers in the garden right now just to

show that we have entered what I like to describe has the high point of summer

this is now mid summer the time when the Sun is out everything is bright and warm

unfortunately today it is not like that it all sadly things are a little bit

dull and dreary right now here in the birthplace of the English language yes

unfortunately we've also had some new equipment put in for our internet if

you've been watching over the past few weeks you will know that we have had

some problems with the internet connection here sometimes it disappears

for no reason whatsoever it just vanishes so we've had some new equipment

installed put in whether it makes any difference or not remains to be seen it

looks at the moment as if everything is working all right I hope you can see me

and hear me ok for those who are wondering my name is duncan i teach

english i talk about the english language i do things a little bit

differently if you are a first-time viewer if you've never seen me before

you will see over the next few minutes that i do things slightly differently

some people feeling unwell for various reasons things are changing this weekend

by the way here in the UK it's almost as if we are like little creatures coming

out of hibernation after the long winter months so lots of people will be going

outside this weekend they will go be they would be going shopping they will

be going to their local restaurants and pubs they will start to go outside again

as lockdown is eased a little bit more this weekend July 4th will be the day

when everything here in England becomes a little bit more normal not a hundred

percent but a little bit more normal as many of the shops many restaurants many

places begin opening their doors again unfortunately it's not all good news a

lot of people will be losing their jobs after the three months of lockdown many

people will be losing their jobs it was announced today on the news so it isn't

all good news I'm afraid a lot of people who have have been told that they might

not have a job when everything gets back to normal

watching for about one month I have one problem and that is when I speak I can

speak with people but when I listen to any videos then I cannot understand

properly well as I often say I always say listening is something you learn as

you develop your knowledge of English so listening is something that comes slowly

some people develop their ability to speak before their ability to hear or

listen to English so I think maybe you have a very unusual problem because you

can speak to people but when you listen to videos then you cannot understand

properly now most people have the opposite problem they find that it is

easy to listen to videos and my lessons but it is difficult when you have to

speak to people outside but it does come slowly it is a skill listening

is a skill speaking is a skill just like everything it takes time to learn

yesterday morning I woke up I open my window I went into the bathroom to clean

my teeth and I looked out the window and guess what I saw would you like to see

what I saw out of my window here is the view that greeted me

yesterday morning this is actually filmed from my bathroom window so whilst

cleaning my teeth I had the unusual pleasure of watching

all of the cows resting on the back field they all look so relaxed

there is something lovely about watching the cows when they are resting because

most of the time they are walking around eating the grass so most of the time

they are eating however you can see there they are taking a rest taking a

lovely little break relaxing themselves whilst I was

cleaning my teeth you might even see some pigeons as well you might see the

occasional pigeon flyby as well so there the lovely cows for those wondering and

asking yes the cows are still at the back of the house they are still there I

don't know how long they will be there for but they are still there and there

they were yesterday morning resting and relaxing I wonder what time Carole's

wake up I would imagine it's very early so I suppose when I'm still in bed

sleeping I would imagine that the carols are already outside in the field I think

so they are very cute cows they are very young cows and quite often they will

come over to the fence of our garden and they will look over the fence and they

will watch as we are working in the garden they are very inquisitive young

animals are quite often inquisitive they are curious they like to see what is

grammar and one of the things I like to show you sometimes are the videos that

I've made so we will be having a look at an excerpt from one of my English

lessons that I made quite a while ago however it is still a lesson that is

current English doesn't change very much maybe over the years we will get

different slang words or maybe the meanings of certain words will change

however for most of the time the English language remains the same also we have

the sentence game yes we are going to play the sentence game using the letter

C today the letter C is what we are looking at so words beginning with the

letter C coming up a little bit later on as well and of course we have your live

first day of the month arrives here we go then a quick look at prepositions

this is one of my many video lessons that exists on my youtube channel hi

everybody this is mr. Duncan in England how are you today are you okay I hope so

are you happy I hope so in today's lesson I'm going to talk

about a group of words which for many students can cause quite a lot of

confusion yet they need not as they exist in almost all forms of written and

spoken language in fact and using them right now as I speak to you in today's

lesson we are going to take a look at prepositions

a preposition is a word that helps us to construct and define meaning in a

sentence prepositions are like the glue of a sentence they formulate the

relationship between certain words they articulate they help us define what we

want to say they help us to join words with meaning together they are purely

functional words sometimes having no apparent definition yet without them we

would find it very hard to make ourselves understood prepositions

usually come before nouns however they don't always follow or come after nouns

in English grammar a determiner such as the can be placed between a preposition

and a noun let us not forget that adjectives may also come between a

preposition and a noun on white horses up dark alleys over green hills no

matter how it is used in a sentence a preposition never changes its form

prepositions are mostly used singularly on their own in a sentence they normally

consist of six letters or less there is also the two-word form of a

prepositional clause and a three worded group as well

prepositions are usually placed among other words with the inner sentence

however sometimes they come at the very end of one which some people object to

the overall description of a preposition defines the way in which a sentence is

constructed the general term for this is at position this type of word defines

other formations such as a post position which formulates the sentence after the

now post positions exist in other languages such as Japanese and Turkish

there is also the circum position where two defining parts appear on both sides

of the dependent now generally speaking prepositions are the ones most commonly

used especially in English having said that there are post positions in English

such as a go apart aside away hints on and through ten years ago this apart

such matters aside ten light years away five years hence two weeks on the whole

night through another variation of preposition use is stranding this is

when a preposition occurs where it normally would not yet still expresses a

meaning a good example is the sentence who did you give it to this works

because it is an interrogated sentence the word who appears at the beginning of

the sentence so too can end the sentence as it clearly refers to who this form of

sentence is most commonly found in English the use of prepositions at the

end of a sentence has for many years been the subject of argument should a

preventing a preposition ending a sentence there are those who are against

it being done the earliest recorded objection to the use of prepositions at

the end of sentences came in the 17th century by the poet John Dryden who

mistakenly likened the English language to Latin which does not allow

prepositions to end any sentence fortunately for

this rule was never followed so if you want to ask where do you come from or

where are you going to you still can

over the years words used in English have changed and altered and

prepositions are no exception a few of them have become obsolete during the

last century a couple of good examples being unto and twixt the preposition

clause allows sentences to be formed they allow nouns to be used in an

expressive way they color in the parts of a phrase which would otherwise sound

disjointed and confusing they define the placement of an object with something

else its position its appearance its movement and its intention it would be

fair to describe prepositions as the building blocks of sentences without

them we would not be able to express clearly what we want to say they hold

the context of the sentence in place they helped place actions with nouns and

nouns with other nouns the most commonly used prepositions are of 2 in 4 with and

on
