How to Say London Airports | Heathrow | Gatwick | Stansted

Eat Sleep Dreamers welcome to my brand new series 'How to Say'. In this series we look

at how to pronounce difficult words in English. It could be difficult English vocabulary,

it could be place names, it could be names of people. Whatever it is that you find difficult,

that's what we are going to look at. Today we're looking at London airports because so

many of you have asked me 'Tom how do you say this London airport' or 'that London airport'.

So that's what we are going to look at today. I can't wait, let's get going.

One of the world's busiest airports, Heathrow. Now you can put the stress either on the first

syllable Heathrow or on the second syllable Heathrow. I've heard it said both ways. That

/th/ throw, so Heathrow. So an example sentence 'I'm going to Heathrow to pick up my sister.'

London's second busiest airport Gatwick. Now you'll notice there that /t/ in the middle

is not pronounced so it's not Gatwick, it's Gatwick. the stress is on the first syllable

Gatwick, Gatwick airport. So an example sentence 'How are you going to get to Gatwick?' An

airport to the north-east of London, just outside London is Stansted. So the stress

is on the first syllable. Stansted airport. An example sentence 'Are you flying from Stansted?'

Another small airport to the north of London is Luton. The /o/ there is actually a schwa,

so it's Luton, Luton airport. 'I've never flown from Luton airport.' And the last major

airport in London is City airport. This is actually in the centre of London, it's just

by Canary Wharf, the financial area used by a lot of business people flying round Europe

particularly. Let's say it together City airport. 'You can get to City airport really easily.'

Alright guys, so to review we had Heathrow, we had Gatwick, we had Stansted, we had Luton

and we had City airport. Five major airports for London. In the next how to say I'll be

looking at London's major train stations because I know how difficult they are to say for anyone
